Now only a few years later, many of those same leaders and companies seem to have forgotten the very people who helped dig them out of a hole” I was incredibly grateful that six of the black female leaders featured by Walter agreed to be part of a discussion with me on this topic. Forget doing it for the kids, it’s the live event audience you need to get onboard! Another BRITS come and gone! Amazing live performances and production. My daughter helped explain who 90% of the artists were, and in return, I explained who Kylie was to her! A fair exchange I think, right? Although the TV production was slightly marred by the weird disconnect between live event and audience. It just felt a bit....odd! Some comments on X: ‘All 3 presenters did a great job considering the audience was non-responsive most of the time.' ‘The audience are like they’ve been forced against their will to be there’ ‘Like, no excitement no enthusiasm. Like wtf!!! Just sat there like zombies.' I'm still waiting for a ‘the audience were all AI generated’ conspiracy! Yes, for the audience the live event presence was probably bigger than the presence of TV coverage but it’s a great reminder that, no matter how sensational the show or your content, in 2024, when people are such a key part in your success metric, it’s still 100% all about getting them onboard, and keeping them there! When creating content or planning the flow for your next event, think about these 4 points: RETAINING ATTENTION: In such a fast-paced world, people have numerous distractions vying for their attention. If you fail to keep your audience engaged, they are likely to lose interest and shift their focus elsewhere. Consider the narrative flow of your presentation or event; storytelling tactics and a considered audience journey will help keep interest and intrigue MAKING CONNECTIONS: An attentive audience is more likely to feel connected to your content or performance. This connection can lead to stronger relationships between you and your audience, whether you're a brand trying to build rapport with customers or a speaker trying to resonate with your listeners. BUILD TRUST AND CREDIBILITY: When you consistently deliver meaningful content and make authentic connections, you demonstrate your expertise and commitment to your audience's needs. This will build trust and credibility, making your audience more likely to rely on and respond to your messaging or solutions. ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION: Achieving these first three points mean that audiences are more likely to respond actively, whether by commenting, discussing, or sharing. Give them the opportunity and invitation for this interaction, even if they are in disagreement. All participation, when offered and received openly, can positively amplify your message and extend your reach. So sure thing, get Kylie AND Dua Lipa on stage, but make Engagement, Connection, Trust, and Participation the priorities to ensure your next live event captivates the audience from start to finish. Because in 2024, it's no longer just about the show - it's about making every audience moment count!

PR is one of the building blocks of a successful marketing and brand strategy. It's a key part of our #drumbeatmarketing philosophy at York IE. We're big believers in creating and distributing content through your own channels: blog, social media, newsletter, etc. Building your audience is step one. But you can't forget the #PR part and the importance of 3rd-party validation. An even bigger audience to share your messaging. You can't just pitch inconsistently or chase the latest trends. You need a PR plan. A PR plan isn't a list of feature release dates and press releases. It's the key to consistently getting your message out to new audiences in creative new ways: news announcements, thought leadership, podcasts, interviews, and more. Lessons in Communications, Marketing, and Leadership from Coldplay Lesson #1 🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘 “A lot of things we are really good at as a band are not categories that bands get measured against,” Chris Martin shared with Conan O’Brien on a 2023 podcast. 👥 “The main thing we care about is *that* interaction and communication - partly for our own sake as humans wanting to feel alive and not so alone, to sing together and feel the positivity, and partly for our audience so they can have a great time.” Although I suspect that connecting with the audience is something that many bands would say is a priority, I saw Coldplay go beyond the talk and walk the walk. 👥 The reusable LED bracelets that made each of us an active part of the experience were just the beginning. 👥 Fans were plucked out of the audience to sit at Chris’s piano and sing along to the song they asked to hear. 👥 Chris Martin stopped the show when he saw a fan fall off the stage he was trying to climb onto with a thud loud enough that was noticeable despite the musical volume. The show did NOT go on until there was confirmation that the young man was okay. 👥 Not wanting to end the show on a negative note, the band shifted gears to perform the last few songs across the arena floor, at the far end of the stadium, surrounding themselves with fans that had been furthest from the action for the evening. As marketers, communicators, AND leaders, we can take a cue from Chris to make sure our  audiences feel like they are: 1) Our priority 2) An integral part of the action 3) Deserving our attention despite distractions or inconveniences. Whether our audience is internal (employees) or external (media, influencers, consumers), our interaction and communication with them should be our “main thing.” After all, without our audiences, all those things that our industry measures, whether it is engagement, impressions, or awards, are either impossible to achieve, unsustainable, or both. The other day I was once again reminded that people connect with people. Here are three examples that illustrate this point: 1. An ordinary guy from the Netherlands captured hearts with his story, proving that authenticity resonates. 2. TikTok has proven to have more impact than traditional PR methods, showcasing the power of storytelling in today’s digital age. 3. Gen Z is driving change across industries and deserves our attention and respect. Conclusions? Once again, we were reminded that genuine connections and storytelling are of raising importance.
