Last week alongside Ben Vanlint & Bradley Meadows we ran our first Black Leaders In Tech (B-LIT) roundtable discussion. As a recruiter I have many discussions with businesses and hiring managers around struggles they have faced when trying to grow out diverse teams especially at the exec/leadership level where real impact is made. It was great to sit down and discuss with Black Leaders in the industry there thoughts, experiences and ideas on these four main topics: 👉🏽 What struggles do you face as a diverse leader in tech? 👉🏽 What success have you had as a diverse leader in tech? 👉🏽 What solutions do you want to see implemented across the industry to increase the representation of diverse tech leaders? 👉🏽 How can WE support current and future leaders as a community? It was a really insightful discussion which I personally took a lot from to go away and think about. To have a number of like minded individuals all together in one room educating and formulating plans on how collectively we can improve the representation of black leaders was really inspiring 💫 If you’re a black leader in tech or looking for mentorship to get into a leadership/exec-level position, this is the community for you. We will be doing more collectively to impact those at early stages as future leaders in due time, after all, shared experience is the best teacher. I 💖teaching 1:1. Helping individuals discover new ways of thinking and fostering internal transformation. #LessonsInLeadership #BlackHistoryMonth I remember meeting Efosa KC Obano about 5 or 6 years ago when I was creating a mentorship event to support Black students across Ontario for Black History Month. Watching his leadership journey and impact over the last few years has been truly remarkable. Efosa has expertise in using technology to create social impact, invest with impact, and build early-stage ventures. He has led teams at Dell Technologies, been recognized by the United Nations, Ontario Minister, University of Toronto Scarborough and more for excellence and outstanding impact. He is currently the founder and leader of the Black Founders Network, which supports Black entrepreneurs with capital, community, and capacity building, and African Impact Initiative, which invests in early African innovators. I asked Efosa what advice he would give his younger self on self-leadership and leadership of others. Here are his leadership lessons: Self-Leadership: - God’s plan for your life and work is better than anything you can conceive yourself. Trust Him, prioritize your relationship with Him, and depend on Him completely. He’s the real “chair of your board,” and you willl get the most fulfillment living out what He created you for. - Don’t compromise your health and rest for work. Get better consistency with sleep and periods of peace & tranquility. The longer you keep grinding without doing so, the harder it’ll get to fix those patterns & habits. Leadership of Others: - Leadership is really about service. You will succeed in it to the degree at which you can serve your team, your customers, and stakeholders (investors or partners) to succeed. - Try to see the best in everyone and try to love unconditionally. You will get the best out of your team when you can form genuine connections with them, understand what motivates them, and give them a true sense of ownership with the vision you’re working towards. - You build trust by being in the trenches during hard times and showing grace when it’s not expected or deserved. - Sometimes doing what’s best for someone may involve making a tough decision. But when you are authentically trying to do so and having transparent conversations in real-time, it will hopefully be clear to them too. #leadership #peopledevelopment #selfleadership #leadershipdevelopment

Encourage personal and professional growth. Be Open to Being Mentored: 1. Recognize the value of mentorship. 2. Identify your needs and goals. 3. Seek out potential mentors. 4. Be proactive and reach out. 5. Be open and receptive. 6. Engage actively. 7. Show appreciation and gratitude. Let's work together to support and uplift young Black males. Next up in this series: Patricia Taylor Todd, Esq., PCC, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Founder of Tenacity Executive Coaching, a boutique practice providing executive coaching and consulting services to individuals and businesses, and Executive IQ® by Money Management Institute participant and coach. Our interview with Patricia below reveals her career journey, thoughts on the significance of this month, and invaluable advice for those just starting out in the industry:   What are some of the experiences and opportunities that you can point to that supported your career growth? The turning points in my career were born from courageously investing in my professional growth. After feeling frustrated and "stuck" as an individual contributor, I hired a leadership coach during my transition to management, leading to my promotion to a C-suite HR role. The unexpected opportunity to join the Executive IQ cohort resulted in defining my leadership legacy— centered on serving others in their leadership journeys – and greatly inspired me to take the leap to establish my executive coaching and consulting practice.   What does Black History Month mean to you?  Black History Month is both a crucial and joyous celebration for me. Black history is American history. Black History Month is a time for everyone to celebrate our community, transcending racial boundaries. As a mother, I prioritize ensuring that my sons, and all African-American children, grasp the profound societal contributions of our ancestors and the enduring resilience of our people.   What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? For anyone entering any industry, my key advice is to seek mentorship. Make a point of connecting with individuals open to sharing their experiences and advice as you progress. Identify someone who has achieved your aspirations and build a relationship by asking for help.
