It terrifies me to share this. I'm not a fan of the given headline. But, I'm proud to share my "not so conventional" burnout story with Business Insider. So often, burnout is blamed on bad bosses and toxic workplaces. On ridiculous deadlines and relentless expectations. That may be true SOME of the time. But, that's not my story. I didn't burn out because of the bosses I worked for, or the company I worked at. My bosses were fair. My company was fair. My team was fantastic. I was fortunate. 🔥I burned out because I escaped my past through people pleasing and overworking. 🔥I burned out because I learned from a young age that "no" was not an option. 🔥I burned out because I inherited a belief that men were superior to women. Once I started to claim back my agency through addressing my trauma, I started to respond much differently -- not perfectly - but much more successfully. And, I went on to enjoy 4 more years in executive leadership from a much more centered and grounded place. This article is for the struggling leader, the unhappy executive, those who struggle with mental health, and for anyone who has been impacted by hard things in childhood. You're not alone. And, there's always help. Susan J. Schmitt Winchester - thank you for inspiring me. ❤️ #trauma #leadership #chro #ceo #vulnerability #executive #mentalhealth #wellbeing #anxiety

I was too afraid to tell my boss 'no.' My burnout was so bad that one day I left the office on a stretcher.

I appreciate you sharing your story. I've been very apprehensive about sharing a similar story, mostly because I was shamed by someone when I did share it and was told 'I should have known better since I'm a coach!'

What a powerful story Teresa Vozza. Thank you for sharing this. I can totally relate. And I also appreciate how you shared that your company was not putting the pressure on you. But was it not? The party-planning story seems to hint at a bit more. And of course they asked a woman to lead that initiative! I am so grateful you are doing this work and sharing it what is possible with others. Thank you.

A powerful piece… Through most of my corporate career, I struggled with the same things… and burnout ! I consider it the gift of this stage of my life that I am clear of what about what I’m here to do and am marching to the beat of my own drum. Thanks for this Teresa Vozza

What a powerful story, Teresa. Thank you for sharing so vulnerably. We need to have more conversations like this one. I'm with Kate Wade on the question of whether the party planning really needed to land in your lap, considering that I'm pretty sure no male senior executive would ever be asked to do that, regardless of department. It's interesting how much our past plays into our present, and that sometimes journaling, meditation, and the external self-care measures aren't quite adequate to support the inner work we need to do. I'm so glad you had a great therapist who could walk you through an embodied process to reclaim your power and safety. The work you're bringing to leadership is so important, and I'm certain your experience is at least part of what fuels your passion. Brava!

Thank you Teresa Vozza for sharing your story. Your courage to share is so inspiring. Looking at how our past has shaped our present can feel scary. Thank you for sharing your experience to encourage us to explore our own pasts. When we understand ourselves we are empowered to heal and grow beyond our trauma. And I totally agree, our learning is life long⭐️
