The principle of self-defense in international law has long been recognized, but its application is a matter of interpretation and controversy. The United Nations Charter, specifically Article 51, acknowledges the inherent right of self-defense in response to an armed attack. However, the use of force must comply with the principles of necessity, proportionality, and immediacy. Compliance with these principles is often difficult to assess and frequently leads to disagreements. Legal scholars, political analysts, and international bodies often debate whether a country is complying with these principles. #internationallaw #armedconflict #selfdefense #israelpalestineconflict

Why are there five UN Security Council vetoes, rather than four or six (near misses!) or none at all? What actions do the vetoes _not_ apply to, and what relevance does that have to human rights and war crimes? Thanks to the Journal of National Security Law & Policy for publishing my article, which tells the twisting tale.
