While I share the sentiment behind this post, I also feel it very offensive to mention, "We are not a third-world country." Maybe the author did not realize it, but the saying sounds discriminatory. Why are we still using those expressions in the 21st century? If discrimination is banned in America, we need to stop making those statements. Saying that we are not a third-world country is saying we are superior to them or the people of those countries. Remember that we have people from all over the world in America, and they are present at every level of society. Therefore, people from "third-world countries" are US investors, CEOs, managers, and workers. For many of us, they are our providers, bosses, and co-workers. So, why are we still thinking we are superior to them? And for what concerns the event itself, while it is regrettable, it is not a first in US history. Four US sitting presidents have been assassinated. And, if we dig deeper, we will find that "third-world countries" were created by "first-world countries." They are the ones who stole their diamond, gold, treasury, and human resources. But as the post implies, are people in "third-world countries" not barbarians? Are they not killers? Once again, we need to look back in history to realize that "first-world countries" have killed more people on this earth than any other group. Therefore, this version would be more human: "I don't care what side of politics you are on. This is unacceptable for any President or candidate to experience an assassination attempt. We, Americans, must stop doing this. Prayers for President Trump as he is a very lucky man..."

This is a sentiment I wish I entirely agreed with because I surmise Terri Botterbusch’s intentions are sincere, but as I reread this note I felt a need to address a few things: 1. I agree an assassination attempt on any candidate including that of a former U.S. President, President Trump in this case, is a heinous act and deserves the most severe penalty. I too was saddened by this moment in our history. 2. “Third World” country is an outdated and an inappropriate term that was never used simply in a attempt to accurately describe the economic development in poorer countries across the globe, but a political term (which quickly became a stereotype) used to categorize/group countries during the Cold War to understand their relationship relative to U.S. interests. Countries with a lower Human Development Index (ranking based on life expectancy, education, per capita income, etc) are considered, “Developing Nations” but the IMF is even phasing out these sort of terms because they perpetuate continued divisiveness, belittlement, and really are no longer relevant, if they ever really were. Point being, the U.S. is being considered a Developing Nation based on indicators of democracy inequality. Check out Kathleen Frydl out of Hopkins. 3. I grew up being read, Aesop’s Fables, and I’ve told several of those stories to my children by memory, especially when trying to impart wisdom when they’ve landed themselves in trouble or even to help them avoid trouble. They’ve served many as a great resource to remind and to guide us when at a junction in life, whether that’s in our youth or beyond. I came across an article by Tom Burke, a columnist out of Everett, Washington, (https://lnkd.in/g6p--SJK ) that accurately parallel’s these ancient fables to President Trump’s behavior and rhetoric which I’d suggest people review. My point here is that President Trump and much of the GOP have fanned the flames of hatred, racism, misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia, violence, etc because their insatiable greed demands that they sell their souls to simply put themselves in position to gain what they desire next. 4. According to Biblical scripture, 1) Proverbs 15:27 speaks about the result of greed…”Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,but he who hates bribes will live.” 2) The declaration Jesus makes is clear, you can keep your Earthly interests or you can save your soul(Matthew 16:24-26; John 14:6). Based on this knowledge, these people whom have encouraged,nurtured, emboldened rage culture will receive back what they’ve sown, which is much of what we are seeing and THAT is what I’m most saddened by because it doesn’t have to be this way. Civility in public discourse is something that we should all practice, as discussed in a fairly recent article, The Need for Civility in Public Discourse, by Georgetown Professor, Dr. Ella Washington, much more often and it’s something our leaders, especially should understand and demonstrate best.

We can keeping waiting and hoping that things will change. Or we can now step up and stand behind Trump and let others know. With the Market Economy in every Western Democracy having been replaced by Predatory Economies, no change in political leadership will make significant impact on the fate of these Nations. Unfortunately the discontent created within these Nations, will lead to trade rivalry and nationalism that we are slowly witnessing, a precursor to an even darker future. Financial Globalism which created the problems, must first be addressed,before political instability and war become inevitable.
