I am very grateful and humbled to have been nominated as Fenland Business Person of the Year.   However, this is something that I find incredibly awkward, I don’t like focussing on myself and the achievements of the collective are down to the whole team and not only me.   The interview with the judges last week was uncomfortable for me, however, it did allow me to reflect on the great progress that we have made over the past 3 years, there is too much to mention, but here are some highlights: - Set short, medium and long term goals with action plans - Evolved our vision and mission building on our core values of customer service and creating the type of environment we want to work in - Untangling of ownership and responsibility roles, clarifying roles and responsibilities - Changed our mindset - Always seeking ways to improve from the smallest to biggest details - Recruited key team members that fit with our culture - Joined forces with Jan JLM Health and Safety Ltd - Expanded our White & Eddy service offering - Improved processes and procedures with the focus on simplicity - Formed WE Consulting Engineers allowing us to offer Structural and Civil Engineering - Launched new and updated websites - Created a team to focus solely on our residential extensions and alterations projects - Arranged business coaching and appointed a non-executive chair Andy Leet - Working with the wonderful Joe Mills, FCIPD Tree Academy to improve our people focus, communication and human connection   This has all been driven with a focus on our clients and our vision of: Simplifying the Process of Creating buildings for our clients and to deliver spaces that improve the lives of people that use them This underpins everything we do!   It’s not been without its challenges, but I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date and there is more to come!!   More to follow on that this afternoon...   Its may be too late, but here is a to a great 2024!!

Another spectacular rail and transportation project underway by SOM's Transportation Architecture practice. We are seeing more of these important projects types worldwide as we migrate to public transportation - some places much slower than others. In Asia Pacific we are seeing an acceleration in urban large-scale mixed-use developments which are railway and transport orientated developments.

Last Friday, Element5 Founder and VP, Corporate Citizenship Patrick Chouinard spoke to ULI Toronto's Curtner Urban Leadership Program cohort at the BDP Quadrangle offices to discuss the City of Toronto's return to the housing development market as one piece of the broader affordable housing mix, and more broadly on architecture and design as it relate to public housing. We of course, are big proponents of the use of #masstimber for #affordablehousing. As the affordable housing crisis is fundamentally a supply problem, the solution involves industrializing the supply chain by building more multi-unit housing in factories - and this can be done with #masstimber and have the biophilic benefits that go with it for the occupants.

Thank you to the Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons School of Design for hosting this interesting event last week. Sheetza McGarry, a former Hines NYC intern (one of the best) currently seeking her masters in architecture and a research assistant at the Healthy Materials Lab, invited me to speak alongside my great friend Charlotte Bell (she/her) with Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County, Drew Vanderburg with RiseBoro Community Partnership and Brandon Pietras with Bernheimer Architecture about design techniques for affordable housing to create spaces people want to live, feel safe and feel healthy. My career has not been in affordable housing and I am certainly not an expert in affordable housing design, but I do have extensive experience having worked with Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County through ASHRAE NYC Chapter along with deep experience in seniors housing design and how designing spaces purposely built for those that are going to use them with extremely thoughtful design can turn a project from ok into exceptional. The Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons School of Design has built quite a data base of different materials and techniques that is available for everyone to utilize. Sheetza McGarry and the co-founder of the Healthy Materials Lab Alison Mears have also started and built an impressive database of ACTUAL healthy, affordable projects all around the United States as part of the Building Healthy Homes initiative. They already have about 8000 units of housing in the data base and are looking for more! Some takeaways 👉 Exceptional design does not have to be expensive or use the highest ends materials. It needs to be thoughtful to ensure the end user, regardless of wealth or class, is able to efficiently, effectively and comfortably use and live in their space. 💰 Keeping utility costs low for those that can least afford it is critical (especially for Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County). A constant balance between construction costs and energy saving/zero carbon/healthy material design techniques and systems is key. 🚃 Many factors including supply chain disruption, manufacturing source, performance, aesthetics and cost can impact the materials chosen for a project. When selecting materials, find levers you can pull for the 'biggest bang for your buck' with cost, impact on the tenant (directly and indirectly), embodied carbon, durability and energy performance. A few home runs can make up for a lot of strikeouts. 🙍♂️ 🙍♀️ Stakeholder and community engagement is critical. Make sure what you're choosing to build and the materials utilized are something the potential or current tenants WANT rather than what you THINK they want

On Monday, August 12th, Andrew Watkins and the JZMK team, alongside City Staff, presented an update on the Moraga Canyon Specific Plan with the Piedmont Planning Commission. The workshop aimed to gather support and feedback on the proposed architectural styles for the new multifamily residential development. The Planning Commission provided valuable insight and endorsed the proposed styles. Once the Administrative Draft of the Specific Plan is ready, the Commission will review the full document and offer additional feedback. Unfortunately it appears that this complex of structures is another case of massing gone awry - no form based zoning to speak of - no flow of open spaces connected to anything just bounded plaza volumes that don't serve any purpose other than - OK - there is some open space - that's a bonus but what a feng shui nightmare of a layout - no hierarchy - no focal points - no splines but maybe one in the very middle leading to no one knows - varigation of scale feels completely random to adjacent uses / environs - lost opportunity to create a mixed-use corridor with activities and services off the primary arterial ? Great rendering though - ;) - chop slash and dash masterplanning bones - beam me up Scottie - -
