There are many reasons to celebrate Kathy Cole, CPC today.
1) Kathy has been a leader, advocate, and friend to many in the construction industry for 25+ years.
2) Kathy has been actively involved in CFMA for 18+ years. She has served many leadership roles at the CFMA Chicago Chapter level, including as a past president and at the national level on the Executive, Leadership, and Chapter Resource committees.
3) Today is Kathy's birthday! 🎂 🎉 🎈
We asked her a few questions about her career path and the role CFMA has played throughout her journey.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your career path.
A: My construction industry experience began when I managed a branch office for a Fortune 500 staffing company. One of my top clients was a regional CPA firm specializing in construction, and they started referring their construction clients to me. It was such a positive relationship that I eventually joined that firm and started a construction executive search practice. Ultimately, my employer was sold to a national CPA firm, and a short time later, I founded DK Cole Company.
Q: In your opinion, what is the most important benefit of CFMA membership?
A: It’s a tie between networking and education. I have a strong appreciation for the caliber of education provided by the local chapter in addition to National. Also, getting involved in committee work is a great way to gain problem-solving and leadership experience. I learn something new on a regular basis through CFMA. Equally important are the relationships I’ve made and people I’ve met who I consider to be lifelong friends!
Q: Any advice to women considering a field in construction/finance?
A: There is tremendous opportunity for women in all aspects of construction! While construction has traditionally been male-dominated, employers have become very intentional about attracting a diverse workforce, including women. As for finance, we have an extreme shortage of talent between entry-level and CFO. For those who seek training and mentorship, you can realistically see a rapid advancement in construction accounting. Even without a formal accounting degree, you can be very successful with hard work, a good employer, and CFMA education and training. . . Not to mention obtaining the CCIFP certification!
