It's commendable that there has been a 15% increase in the number of employees. However, it may be prudent to reconsider the decision to slow down the hiring until effective strategies are devised to retain these new personnel. Simply increasing the workforce, while doing nothing to change the root cause of the problem (being overworked and underpaid), will result in continual turnover and loss of institutional knowledge. As someone who comes from a military background, I can assure you that these words can be off-putting. While it's true that the healthcare audience is amazing, let's not forget that they are real people who deserve to be treated with respect and professionalism. So, let's ditch the unnecessary fluff and focus on highlighting their skills and expertise. Ben Wallace (while in favour of allowing personnel to sport beards, did not believe this would “fix” the staffing problem): 'It’s not going to make a difference to recruiting in any way. The real issue around recruitment isn’t about beards, it’s about medical conditions that take too long to deal with.' Lord Dannatt: 'Beards or not are irrelevant to improving the recruitment crisis. The big problem with recruiting is cutting the delay for applications of people starting their training. The military needs to go back to recruiting offices on the high street manned by soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines. Applicants were processed quickly then and it was measured in weeks rather than months and, in some cases, years. The old system used to work and we didn’t have a recruiting problem. The critical thing is cutting down the delay between applying and being rejected or accepted. We have lost far too many good applicants because it takes too long.'

Today, U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su recognized VSO as one of the 859 recipients of the 2023 HIRE Vets Medallion Award during a virtual award ceremony presented by U.S. Department of Labor. VSO earned the platinum award for the third year in a row and previously won gold. The Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act (HIRE Vets Act) Medallion Program is the only federal award program that recognizes employers who successfully recruit, hire, and retain veterans. "VSO has consistently applied for and won the Department of Labor’s Hire Vets Award to give confidence to any Veteran looking into VSO or considering working for VSO the confidence that comes with working for a company that meets the stringent standards required by the DOL to be privileged enough to display the HireVets medallion, says Duke Birch, Director of Veterans Programs." Displaying this medallion also increases the awareness of the value that Veterans bring to VSO, to our partners, other employers, and any organization that is wise enough to hire them.” VSO is proud to stand next to more than 1600 employers who have earned a HIRE Vets Medallion Award since 2018.
