Are we helping or hurting? That is a question many residents of San Francisco ask ourselves in the midst of a stark and increasing equity gap. As a parent, community member, and incoming board member of the Horizons at San Francisco Friends School, I’m keenly aware of the potential learning loss our public school students in the Mission District experience in the summer months without our support. Our city is undergoing another crisis - looming budget cuts threaten vital programs like Horizons at SFFS that provide equitable learning for Mission youth. We urgently need your support to secure bridge funding and ensure our summer enrichment continues. Our scholars and families are relying on Horizons' high-quality academics and social-emotional growth.  Horizons has been successfully leveraging the months when students are out of school to stem summer learning loss for children in San Francisco for ~10 years. The program has also intentionally increased impact by supporting their scholars through their educational journey during the school year and into High School. Last year, Horizons impacted 150+ scholars with targeted small classroom instruction, confidence-building, and joyful community enrichment experiences- thanks to our dedicated summer education workforce. In past years, the SF Department of Children, Youth and Families has been a partner to increase access to education for our students. Founded in 2004, Higher Heights Youth Empowerment Programs, Inc. is a state-wide college access organization that promotes equal access and opportunities for under-represented college bound student to obtain a post-secondary education in Connecticut.  Our goal is to increase college readiness, participation and completion in Connecticut among low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color.Each year HHYEP has had 100% high school graduation rate, 100% college acceptance rate, and 80% parent involvement rate. Higher Heights has personally employed over 95 youth, 100% have graduated from high school, 95% have enrolled into college receiving over $10 million in scholarships and grants.  The mission of HHYEP is to change the lives of under-represented college bound students to EMPOWER, ENCOURAGE, and EQUIP them to obtain a post-secondary education. Access to resources offered at Catholic Charities Northside Child Development Center and at V3 Sports is particularly important in North Minneapolis, because young adults under 18 make up roughly 40% of the population in the Near North neighborhood. Our children's futures will rely on the work we do today — Near North's unemployment rate is twice that of the rest of the city, and many organizations are working to promote economic stability, job opportunities, and education equity. Give to get. The only way for us to raise funds for a state-of-the-art 35,000SF varsity performance center was to give more than to ask without context. We needed to listen, to understand why alums don’t come back to campus, send their kids to their Alma mater and frankly invest back into athletics for the past 50+ years! The challenge was lack of Transparency, Vision, and Experiences. Our solution? Show what the funding is used for, treat athletes and alums on and off-campus right, and meet alums where they live, work, and play. Doesn’t matter the level of play, or school, your student athletes are 5% of all the high school athletes that have earned a very select roster spot at your university. They Earned It!

Whether it's sharing our time, financial resources, or knowledge and talents, doing so with others is a profound source of fulfillment. What we give, we get back, twofold, whether we're consciously aware of it or not. For over a decade, I've shared my time, resources, and knowledge with Every Kid Sports. This nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization serves the kids being priced-out of playing sports by paying their sports registration fees. This seemingly transactional impact is rich with developmental, experiencial, and emotional outcomes for kids. Playing youth sports is a rite. *** The opinions and remarks expressed in this post are solely mine and do not reflect the opinions, principles, or conduct of my employer or the organization that I am affiliated with. *** Last September, members of the Friends of Cudell Commons Park group were granted a temporary restraining order preventing Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) from proceeding with the construction of a new Marion-Seltzer Elementary school on what is now Cudell Commons Park. CMSD’s plans would result in the loss of 44% of the Park’s greenspace, the basketball courts in the northeastern corner of the park, and the destruction of 40 mature trees.   After hearing two days of testimony including closing arguments regarding our request for a preliminary injunction, Judge Nancy Russo recused herself from the case, citing a conflict of interest. The case was reassigned to Judge Ashley Kilbane who recently ruled against the preliminary injunction and vacated the TRO, saying in part, "Plaintiffs claims of harm only discuss the removal of trees, and mature trees; but they do not address how they would still be irreparably harmed after new trees are planted and grow into mature trees." This type of illogical reasoning is exactly why Cleveland continues to lose its tree canopy at an alarming rate.    The Friends of Cudell Commons Park group is planning a march from Cudell Park to the next CMSD School Board Meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, where we will gather to peacefully protest before the meeting and participate in the Board’s public comment portion, asking the CEO of CMSD Dr. Warren Morgan, the School Board, and Mayor Justin Bibb to come up with a plan for a new school that doesn’t require destroying the Cudell neighborhood’s only park.    We will be leaving the Park at 5pm to make the short approximately 2 mile walk to Waverly Elementary school on W. 57th Street.
