Unfortunately, I have found this to be true from time to time about staff who work within the Tennessee Department of Correction. I’ve never understood the thought process of complaining about your workplace in a public forum, only to turn around a criticize it for being short staffed. Why in the world would anyone want to come work with you when all you do is complain about how bad it is?! I once heard someone say, “Don’t ask me to bury a body without bringing me a shovel.” If you want to complain, that’s fine; but be prepared to share a solution with your leadership when they call you out or ask you what could be done differently or better. Change starts from the bottom. Don’t be the reason why negativity is perpetuated in your organization.

What does it mean to be “authentic”: Being actually and exactly what is claimed. Being true to your own values despite being pressured to do otherwise. I am invited to speak about authentic leadership often, and also post frequently on LinkedIn about this topic, as I believe passionately in its impact on my agency, career, and the lives of those with whom I work. For me, authentic leadership means “you are what you repeatedly do”. I still get up at 2 am and commute to work to see every card/shift that reports to work Monday-Friday and see every correctional staff member who works for me. Your staff don't want to hear what you are doing for them, they want to see it. Specifically the younger generations. I am on the “back 9” of this amazing career in correctional leadership. This is a stage in my life where I am turning the page on this amazing career and my goal is for the staff coming up behind me to realize what a great career choice this is post-COVID and the great exodus of talented people. I was offered numerous promotions throughout my career and made choices to preserve my marriage and relationship with my children over chasing the next GS grade. I have absolutely no bitterness and feel only sincere gratitude for the opportunities I was provided. My greatest accomplishments have been my 33-year marriage, and raising four great kids (one college graduate and three Marines). Having worked for 11 prisons, in six states and for five different agencies I attempt to share the experiences I have encountered. In four of the five agencies, I started over each time as the most junior CO, with terrible days off and working every holiday. I have a true appreciation for all the amazing things our correctional officers do. Working in the correctional system can be challenging but so rewarding.

POPCRU applauds the DCS for the recent appointment of 1,003 trainees as permanent officials. This is a positive step towards addressing ongoing staff shortages and creating safer environments within our country’s correctional facilities. However, while this is a positive step forward, we would like to reiterate the urgent need for a far more substantial increase in correctional officers we want the number of warm bodies increased from 27,000 to 40,000, and a further 80,000 over four years. Our facilities are severely overcrowded, and our members are stretched too thin, leaving them vulnerable to potential threats. We desperately need more resources to ensure the well-being of both staff and inmates. We urge the DCS to prioritise ongoing recruitment and retention efforts. The holidays, theoretically, are a time of reflection and, perhaps, forgiveness. It’s a time of warmth and relationships. Over the last several years, ELP has gained a rather strong toehold in the corrections and prison space.
