Hellas Sat and Thales Alenia Space sign a Memorandum of Understanding to develop optical communication payload for Hellas Sat 5 satellite Hellas Sat and Thales Alenia Space, a joint-venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of an optical communication  payload for the upcoming new mission to be embarked on the future Hellas Sat 5 telecommunications satellite, operating in  geostationary orbit at 39 degrees East. The partnership between Hellas Sat and Thales Alenia Space aims to provide cutting-edge communication services with very high data rates from geostationnary orbit. This innovative payload aims to connect with Optical Ground Station of the National Athens Observatory in Greece, Optical Ground Stations in France, Optical Ground Stations of European Space Agency - ESA and Thales Alenia Space's LEO HydRON telecommunication satellite.  After Vertigo H2020 programme, Thales Alenia Space is currently advancing the development of very high data rate capacities (up to 1 terabit/second) facing long distances from ground to geostationnary orbit and cross-atmospheric turbulence, with support from France Relance (CO-OP), CNES (DYSCO) and ESA (HydRON). #MoU #Telecomunication #Satellite #Mission #Orbit #GeostationaryOrbit https://lnkd.in/embHAPH5

🛰 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥-𝟏𝐃 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬   The Copernicus #Sentinel1D satellite is currently undergoing a series of tests at Thales Alenia Space’s plant in Rome, Italy.   Sentinel-1D has successfully completed the thermal vacuum tests, which simulate the thermal conditions that the satellite will experience in orbit.   Once the chamber is sealed and the air has been pumped out to create a vacuum, Sentinel 1D is exposed to extreme temperatures representing the huge fluctuations of temperature actually experienced in space.   In the next weeks the spacecraft will undergo a series of functional and environmental tests, including the solar panels deployment and vibration test.   Once in orbit, Sentinel-1D will continue the critical task of delivering key radar imagery for a wide range of services, applications and science – all of which benefit society. #sentinel1d #earthobservation #climatechange #sustainablespace #spaceforlife European Space Agency - ESA Thales Leonardo

The advent of satellite constellations, the miniaturization of payloads, and private companies' access to space have significantly increased the number of objects launched into orbit. Space debris is a global concern and represents a hazard for space activities. Thanks to the investments promoted for the Space Debris Laser Ranging (SDLR) of Matera, Italy is at the forefront of the sector. The SDLR will be able to locate and identify the trajectory of artificial objects in orbit, from Leo to Geo orbits. Actually, the observation station foresees the development of the first national laser sensor entirely dedicated to Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST). Several sessions of the #IAC2024 will focus on analyzing possible solutions for the problem of space debris. These sessions will address the multiple aspects of Space Traffic Management and Space Situational Awareness, including safe operations in space dealing with Space Debris, operational observations, and orbit determination. Space sustainability though is not just about space debris and the future needs to include a discussion on developing a truly circular economy for space. Debris should be the past for the space sector, a past that needs cleaning up, and the future is developing re-useable satellites and not just single use satellites. Exciting news from the Space Development Agency (SDA)! 🚀 In a groundbreaking achievement, the SDA has successfully demonstrated space-to-ground data communications from low Earth orbit satellites. Link 16 terminals on three Tranche 0 Transport Layer satellites, launched by SpaceX earlier this year, communicated with radios on the ground in three recent demonstrations. This milestone is part of SDA's ambitious Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, aiming to build a space data network and deploy an internet in space, facilitating seamless data transfer between satellites and military systems on Earth, at sea, and in flight.
