🖥 Digital interoperability! Interoperability is the cornerstone of NATO. For 25 years, NATO Allies and partners have gathered at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXercise (#CWIX), #NATO's largest interoperability exercise, to test the technology and standards needed to exchange and share information across all domains. This exercise is essential to NATO's future as an MDO-enabled Alliance, fueled by #DigitalTransformation. We, as MilSOFT, have proudly supported the #CWIX for over 15 years. OHB Digital Connect GmbH, a subsidiary of the space and technology group OHB SE, has been commissioned by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in Koblenz to regenerate the UHF DAMA control station in Kastellaun. The abbreviation UHF stands for “Ultra High Frequency” and refers to electromagnetic waves in the frequency band from around 300 megahertz to 3 gigahertz. DAMA stands for “Demand Assigned Multiple Access”. This is a technology for temporarily allocating communication channels to different users according to demand. “Following the realisation of the UHF control station in Gerolstein, we are delighted that we now have the opportunity to contribute our expertise once again to the construction in Kastellaun,” says Wilfried Wetjen, head of the Communications Systems department at OHB DC. The Kastellaun UHF control station is part of SATCOMBw, the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) satellite-based communications system and a central resource for UHF troop communications. With the signing of the #Memorandum of Understanding, APSS has now transitioned into the implementation phase in which over the next five years, 17 Allies are contributing the equivalent of more than 1 billion USD to leverage #commercial and national #space #assets, and to expand #advanced #exploitation capacities. With the signing of the Letter of Intent for the Allied software for Cloud and Edge (#ACE) services by 22 Allies, a new multinational #acquisition activity will revolutionize Allied #operations by providing key building blocks of the Alliance-wide #Digital #Backbone. 🌐 Terrestrial mmWave mesh networks are proving to be a key element in providing resilient networking at the tactical edge. Mesh networks are made up of multiple points called ‘nodes’. These nodes are wireless radio devices that communicate with one another, creating an overlapping mesh that does not rely on a central hub. This allows for quick and efficient data routing. Nodes are self-sufficient and self-managed, finding the fastest and most reliable paths. Mesh networks are built to connect multiple systems, working in tandem with existing technologies, to create a holistic system that delivers reliable transmission of massive amounts of data. 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗗 #𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗔 #𝗖𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛 NATO is looking to mitigate internet disruptions from a potential attack on undersea cables by rerouting the data to space. The Hybrid Space/Submarine Architecture Ensuring Infosec of Telecommunications (HEIST) initiative was launched July 31, a NATO press release says. The goal is to develop a hybrid network made up of both submarine cables and satellite communications that ensures a continuous flow of data. The HEIST consortium aims to field a working prototype within two years and perform a demonstration at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden. It would bring together existing technologies, address legal and jurisdictional challenges, and foster international collaboration between NATO members the U.S., Iceland, and Sweden, as well as non-NATO member Switzerland. The $2.5 million project was partially funded by NATO’s Science for Peace and Security program. The Cornell, John Hopkins Bifröst, and Swedish Defense Universities, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and telecommunications companies are all involved to address “the urgent need for a more resilient internet infrastructure worldwide,” says Eyup Turmus, SPS advisor and program manager at NATO.
