#TechTuesday Innovation Spotlight 👷🏽♀️🧑🏻🔬👩🏾💻 Meet Alina Martinez, a Senior Member of the Technical Staff in the Materials Science Department in Aerospace's Physical Sciences Laboratories. Her advice for those considering exploring her field is to: "Try things out, don't be afraid to ask questions, be curious. If you're already interested in being in a STEM field, it will open so many doors for you." Great comprehensive ethnography of NYC's innovation ecosystem! Lots of lessons for So Cal. We're much more fragmented with a bazillion local governments though also key strategic assets including incredible higher ed STEM graduate output, great infrastructure (which we need to invest more in), relatively cheaper housing costs (than the Bay), and deep regional expertise along key tech vectors (entertainment, aerospace, and sustainability etc) https://lnkd.in/gURXXQPq

#TechTuesday Innovation Spotlight 👷🏿♀️🧑🏽🔬👩🏼💻 Meet Tait McLouth, a research scientist in the Materials Science Department, for Aerospace's Physical Sciences Laboratories. Tait's path into the aerospace industry started during undergraduate studies working on materials and carbon fiber composites. That led him to additive manufacturing, and ultimately to where he is now in material sciences. Tait's father nurtured his fascination with science and engineering with things like Lego sets. "If you ask him, he'll tell you that I also like to break things a lot. And so coincidentally, that's part of my job here — breaking things and finding out where their material limits are," he said. One aspect of working at Aerospace that Tait enjoys the most is the ability (and budget) to pursue research interests even though they may not be directly tied to contracted work. These are things the team identifies that may be of use to our customers in the future, thus enabling them to get ahead of the issue and become experts well before a potential use becomes a current need. The work being done at Aerospace is truly incredible. The only thing more incredible are the people who make it happen. #materialsscience #researchscientist

Performance metrics for measuring innovation??? With all the great work and momentum around innovation, we are working on some analysis related to measuring the performance of innovation initiatives. The picture shows a general framework I've used for the past decade on everything from procurement metrics to measuring transformation progress at the VA. Some insights on innovation metrics based on our cross-cutting research thus far: - No clear measurement framework exists to look across initiatives. There are some good examples though such as the work at NASA Jenn Gustetic - Most measures are output oriented as opposed to impact-oriented; for example measuring number of awards vs. impact of those awards; good news is that there is more and more focus towards impact...measuring impact is always a difficult undertaking - Poor visibility into problems/use cases we are solving for and which types of strategies are working; inhibit cross-comparison and decision-making related to which initiatives should be accelerated Would love to hear your thoughts on: - Which metrics you think are most important - What are the drivers of innovation that are most important?
