A little Tuesday challenge: Never start your team retreat planning with the budget. Start with the objective. 🎯 What is the goal of your meetup? I've seen the same scenario over and over: “We have 30,000 EUR for a team retreat for our 50-people-strong team, and we want to go to Barcelona. Can you find a venue for us?” To these clients, I counter reply: * Are you planning to go to Barcelona, because you prefer beach locations? * Do you prefer a beach location because you want fun activities to boost team bonding? * Are you flexible with timing? Should the retreat last 2 days or 1 week? Would you be open to going off-season? Instead of starting with the budget, fix these first: * What is your goal with the retreat? * What type of location do you prefer and why? * When can you go (flexible, not specific) and for how many people? Once you have the answers, the budget will help you find The Perfect Place. In the example above, 30K for 50 ppl in Barcelona will give you a team retreat with compromises. But that budget can make you a baller in Montenegro. Start with the goals. We had an incredible time at our second annual Barrel team retreat in the Catskills a few weeks ago. Huge shoutout to Allison, our Team Experience Coordinator, for pulling off a seamless event and bringing the team together from across the globe. Here are some takeaways from the experience: 🏔 One Location, All-Inclusive: Opting for a single location made a world of difference. The Wylder Hotel provided an all-inclusive experience, streamlining activities and creating a laid-back atmosphere. ✨ Office vs. Distributed Work: Embracing our distributed work culture has given us an awesome team. Instead of yearning for an office, let's focus on deepening relationships, meeting in person, and building a proud company culture. 🌲 Embrace the Outdoors: From hiking to badminton, outdoor activities fostered team bonding. Being active outdoors is a fantastic way to connect and unwind. I look forward to incorporating more activities in the future. 🤝 Deepening Connections with an Expert: Thanks to performance psychologist Alex Auerbach, Ph.D., MBA Auerbach, we delved into personality types, working styles, and values. His presence facilitated a deeper connection among us. 🗺 Learning from Planning Challenges: Planning had its hurdles, but seeking feedback and staying adaptable paid off. In the future, we'll be more prescriptive in certain aspects to enhance the overall experience. Reflections on hosting last week's Event Retreat with Brian Richards, Catt Fields White, Katie Janovec, Jacqueline Meredith, and Sarah Mason: 🎉 Keeping it absolutely simple was essential for a first-time event. It does *not* need to be a big-budget affair to be useful, memorable, or deep. 🎉 As event people we are *doers* and often forget how valuable big-picture strategy can be to our work. 🎉 Giving people space to reflect/recharge/relax in the afternoons was critical to achieving balance and letting natural thought processes gel around the morning discussions. 🎉 It's okay to thoughtfully push back on answers to questions that don't quite hit the mark and help each other hone in on specific action items that do fit the bill. 🎉 Sometimes we can get too in the weeds on systems and tools, which can hamper comprehension of larger strategic priorities. 🎉 Changing the environment periodically stimulates connections between individuals. Not everything needs to be all group all the time. 🎉 There is something really affirming about seeing people take notes when you say something. It's easy to let imposter syndrome get in the way or to assume that what you know deeply is innately shared by those around you. I'm really grateful for the open minds and willingness to share this entire group brought to the retreat. I may be exhausted (I always am after producing an event) but I'm energized and ready to take on what's next thanks to these amazing people. After a few more naps. ✨
