Street children like Emmanuel live in fear of the police, finding hideaways alongside rivers and tunnels that offer quick routes of escape. Getting caught means getting beaten with truncheons, or getting thrown into one of the local “social halls” like Joseph Kangethe. These social halls are horrid temporary solutions to house street children for the sole purpose of getting them out of view of tourists. Made up of abandoned buildings, children fear these places for their violence and inhumane conditions, preferring the streets to them. But there are always worse things for a street child, and that place is jail. Police will sometimes jail street children without giving them charges, locking them away in cells indiscriminately. With no separate detention centers and even blocks, children are often jailed with violent defendants, creating a dangerous environment where the worst things can happen. With no name or papers, children in these places can just disappear. The treatment of street children is the Kenyan police’s best kept secret. We weren’t permitted to film these places and had to go in with a hidden camera. Yet there was no method of finding change in these children’s lives, no social service available by the government to help them. Our documentary “Rescuing Emmanuel” takes a deep dive into the life of street children across the world, focusing on the story of Emmanuel—a young Kenyan boy in desperate need of rescuing. Film is the foundation of our work, allowing us to document cases of child exploitation in the United States and across the world and in term come up with longterm solutions. As many of you know, I am a Trustee of the incredible Working Chance, a charity who support women with convictions into meaningful employment, allowing them to reach their full potential and build a safe and sustainable future. This article, and the BBC drama Time, highlight how short sentences for non-violent offences can upend a women's entire life, leaving them at risk of losing their job, home and children. It's definitely worth a quick read. https://lnkd.in/eN-A3bup

Here’s the great thing … there’s a 99% chance that you’re not going to become incapacitated or die while your children are minors. (Phew!) 🙂 But writing down how you would want your children raised will help you become a more intentional parent today AND prepare your legal guardians for their roles if ever called upon in the future. 🌈 ✨A Kids Protection Plan® includes this and more.✨Read this week’s blog for details.▶️ https://lnkd.in/geSPKgpp #starsialawny #estateplan #estateplanninglawyer #personalfamilylawyer #nypersonalfamilylawyer #nymom #nydad #trustsandwills #probate #legacybuilding #familylegacy #adulting #assetprotection #livingwill #powerofattorney #kidsprotectionplan #incapacityplanning #nyparents #lifeandlegacyplanning

This #GivingTuesday, I challenge you to invest in formerly incarcerated leaders transforming the criminal justice system. I'm honored to have my OpEd highlighting the importance of Giving Local to organizations led by those most impacted by the systems we seek to change featured in The Hill. We know what our current system delivers: inhumane tactics that do little or nothing to improve public and personal safety yet cost the country billions. We must reimagine a nation that prioritizes safety and justice for all. These leaders are building a mosaic of desperately needed solutions to create an approach to justice that serves everyone equally and leads to restoration rather than destruction. #GiveLocal #GivingTuesday
