Dick is 100% spot on. The key thing I would add is: NIHITO. What is NIHITO? It means “Nothing Important Happens In The Office.” It’s a term I first heard from Pragmatic Institute To acquire deep learning and understanding, surveys won’t cut it. You have to get out of the office. It takes conversations with your readers to find patterns that are worth exploring. It’s a process of lowering the risk of new products and features. More importantly, while you can learn from success at other publications, a copy & paste of their idea probably won’t work. You need to be audience specific. The amazing thing is, who is better suited than journalists for sitting down with strangers, asking open ended exploratory questions, and crafting a story around the patterns that emerge? #journalism #localnews #localjournalism #product #qualitativeresearch #audiencedevelopment #audienceinsights
