On Sunday, 110 teenagers, almost all of them low-income, first-generation college students, will move into renovated dorms on a grassy hillside campus. They are the first class to enroll at Messina College, a new two-year undergraduate school run by Boston College on the former Pine Manor College campus. Among them is Michael Melo, a Roxbury teen who lives in public housing with his sister and supports himself with long shifts serving food at Mass General Brigham. “I never thought I would see myself going to college,” Melo said. Read more about the school: https://trib.al/moRcCXe

"Their options would be taking on significant debt to attend a less selective liberal arts college or going to public institutions like the University of Massachusetts Boston or Framingham State, he said." Massachusetts has an extremely good public education system and community colleges which cost a fraction of what Messina does. No mention of what these students will actually be paying with loans. I sincerely hope that every student has an incredible experience, but I am not sold on this.

As a PMC alumni I am so happy Boston College will carry on our mission of empowerment and voice. Pine Manor Colleg was where I discovered my leadership skills and met some pretty amazing female future leaders! 💚🤍💚🤍 Thank you BC 🦅🦅🦅

In Venezuela one of the most prestigious Universities you could go to is La Universidad Central de Venezuela, which is public and practically free. Up to this day I don't know how a small country like Venezuela has been able to do this and in a country like the United States there are no free public Universities. The US needs at least one per state.

This is an inspiring story of resilience highlights the opportunities Messina College brings to low-income, first-generation students. Michael Melo’s journey from serving food at Mass General Brigham to attending college is a testament to his determination and the transformative power of education. It’s heartening to see Boston College investing in the future of these young individuals, showcasing the strength and potential of our city’s youth !

It’s doing the hard work of a traditional community college. Purely curious - why not refer to it as a community college?
