PUSH-UP CHALLENGE // Yup, we're doing it!! Well... actually... Lee Stevens is doing it. He's jumped in with Adam Cheyne MPIA and the Urbankind team because Annie and Nicholas have no upper body strength. Nadda. Zilch. And anyway, Annie has to take the photos and video, and Nick has to count the reps to keep Lee honest. 😉 Sooooo, it would be great to get people on board and support our fundraising efforts. As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we also marked the one-year anniversary of the loss of our founder’s son, Sam Aden, to suicide. The Sam Love & Kindness Fund was created in his honor to support youth mental health awareness and provide critical mental health support for children. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have successfully raised more than $360,000. The Get Grounded Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (Tax ID# 46-5125610), proudly oversees Sam’s Fund and 100% of donations raised go directly toward supporting youth mental health programs. In the past year, we honored Sam and all other children struggling with their own mental health by: • Granting funds to seven organizations that dedicate their time to work with amazing kids and families like Sam who struggle to find peace. • Launching the annual “Random Acts of Sam-ness Day” – where more than 75 friends and family participated in spreading kindness in Colorado, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, California, Texas, Egypt, Copenhagen, Brazil and beyond! • Hitting the slopes at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and raising over $10,000 during the inaugural “Sam's Day of Stoke." Those funds were gifted as a special grant to Mountain in My Mind, a film series about mental health in the mountain communities. • Distributing hundreds of hand-painted “Love & Kindness” garden sticks, designed by the talented Tiffany Lester, placed all over the world to remind people to choose kindness. In our 2022-2023 Impact Report, 70% of our young people who identified as disabled cited mental health issues. Did you wake up today and feel like life is just not worth living? Well, I hope not. But just for a moment as you read that question, you might have glimpsed an insight into the dark world that many people suffering from mental health disorders can face on a daily basis. And unlike the physical health ups and downs that we all experience as a normal part of life, untreated mental health issues can spread like its inky blackness to all corners of a person's life for many years. There are many noble causes to champion, but it is the invisible and life long suffering that I have seen in good people with mental health issues that really concerns me, and especially young people in the complex world we have created for them to live in. I'd like to ask you to help me do something about it. This year is my fourth year leading a team of Port Melbourne legends in the Push Up Challenge. It's a simple thing (sort of). We each do one push up for every life lost to suicide last year over 24 days, and ask you to donate to the cause. Unfortunately that means each of us needs to do 3,249 push-ups, but we will get there!
