Competition is beautiful and if you are following the GenAI field, you're seeing it firsthand. People who believe that OpenAI's GPT models (4, 5...) will be the winner-take-all are incorrect. Mistral is an amazing example of scientists creating new foundation models within new companies. I like Mistral because it is more transparent than OpenAI and most of their models are in the open domain. The big cloud providers know that different models have different strengths and, as a result, AWS and Azure offer many models to their enterprise customers to build their custom solutions to their custom problems.

AI is driving the next wave of cloud growth. In Battery Ventures' 2023 State of OpenCloud report, they identify AI as the key driver of the next era of cloud consumption. Here are my key takeaways from the report: 🔶 AI workloads are expected to drive over $100B of incremental cloud revenue by 2027 as AI fuels the next generation of compute demand. 🔶 Cloud providers like AWS, Azure and GCP are investing heavily in AI capabilities ahead of the curve to capture this demand. 🔶 Generative AI is automating repetitive tasks across functions like sales, marketing, engineering, legal and more. 🔶 AI is improving developer productivity with new tools for code generation, testing and deployment that reduce manual work. 🔶 As AI expands the attack surface, new security and compliance tools are emerging around data management, model monitoring and more. 🔶 Private company unicorns in AI and cloud like Anthropic, Databricks and Stripe represent the next wave of enduring franchise companies. #Cloud #AI #MachineLearning #GenerativeAI #Fintech #BatteryVentures

Stability AI is just the canary in the coal mine. This sort of collapse is going to happen over, and over, and over again during the next 12 months. Generative AI is *expensive* to run, and the only people making money from it are NVIDIA, AWS, Microsoft and Google. Because Picks and Shovels in a Gold Rush, yeah? Eventually, the AI Hype Bubble will burst and the cloud companies will move on to the next way to sell their capabilities. But there will be a lot of AI Startups that will end in tears and disaster. Excellent writeup by Bessemer Venture Partners. Highly recommended reading if you're in the AI space (anywhere from foundation models to consumer tech). Two predictions/statements I most agreed with: 1. "While we’re far from consensus, a slight majority of our partnership predicts Closed-Source models will drive the bulk of LLM compute cycles, and AI Model Giants will eventually split the economic pie (Reality #2)." 2. "Overall while we expect massive value creation in the model layer, this data tells us that as with past infrastructure innovations the majority of enterprise value will once again be captured in the application layer."
