Great to see BigLaw firms like Kirkland continue to provide a strong base for Associates and Partners to then go on to other ventures -- and in this case, return closer to 'home' with a strong network to build out other teams. Many have pegged this coming year as the year of restructurings and consolidation amongst law firms. I think there's room for everyone. BigLaw will continue to shine. Smaller firms will continue to compete on other front, particularly with strategic hiring of top talent.

The DOPE CFO Certified Advisors team had a productive and fun time at MJ Biz Con last week. We are following up and back on the grind this week. Took the weekend to recharge by acting like cats and not speaking with humans lol. But excited now to finish the yer strong. Last week we capitalized on the opportunity to meet with current clients and referral partners all in one place. We took the time to create relationships with new clients and referral partners. We accomplished our networking and business goals by Thursday so took Friday as personal/education day. Compared to last year, sentiment was more positive and long term from both the operators and investors. Not that they were more profitable or had easier access to capital. But they were both more realistic in their expectations of running a business. They are starting to treat their cannabis businesses like traditional businesses. And traditional business is hard, cannabis business is even harder. So knowing the fundamentals (Forecasted Sales/Budgeted Operating Exp./Profit Margins etc.) matter even more. 3 Take Aways from Conversations with Operators and Investors: 1 from an Operator) "There are many of us successful or profitable businesses that are waiting to sell. We have been holding on during this last downturn for the market to improve. And once re-scheduling happens it will be a made dash to sell our companies because capital will be easier to come by. Make sure all your clients are colonoscopy ready for the due diligence process." 2 from a Lender) "I have a deal I want to move forward on. But the F***ing balance sheet doesn't balance. So the oppertunity is great but can't move forward until company can pass due diligence." 3 from an Operator) "We have been in cannabis for 5+ years and still have to navigate around misinformation on 280E taxes. We want to be more proactive and not so reactive with our accounting and tax strategy. But do not know who to trust." We hope success to everyone. ELE. You, and some cousins are a minority shareholders in your family business. "Uncle Joe", the majority shareholder wants to expand, grow and diversify. It will be risky, but all of his research says it's a no brainer. Quite frankly, you are along for the ride. If he is right, you make a bit more money. If he is wrong, you could loose it all, and most likely your family relationships as well. Are we sure we are doing this "Family Business" thing correctly? Congratulations to Les Viner on his appointment announced this morning as a Gildan director. As I wrote here a few months ago, Les is in my Hall of Fame of Managing Partners. In a business law firm, you want a CEO or MP who is respected at the highest levels of business. Herb Solway was that in spades at Goodmans LLP. Mitch Frazer is that at Mintz. That doesn’t mean getting on a client board ( not a good idea pre retirement) or a friend’s board but on a board dealing with real challenges. In real business, the CEO is not an inside person. They are key to bringing in business, raising the firm’s profile in the business community and having multiple roles in the broader community ( education, health, special initiatives, personal and firm charity, speaking). They have a broad perspective and relationships that benefit the firm. Look at the firms you know. Look at your firm. Is your MP or CEO a leader in the broader business world, multiple levels in the community and in the firm? Would a big cap company with a need for a strong thinker on business, law, ethics, and a stellar public profile look to your MP or CEO. How much business have they generated from new clients or contested clients in the last two years? If they don’t have these attributes why does your firm settle for less?
