Many athletes headed to the Paris Olympics received much of their coaching and experience playing sports on American campuses. Colleges have been a major training ground for elite athletes for decades — much of it funded by college football revenue. With new changes that would allocate more money directly to football and basketball athletes, other sports — like swimming, field hockey, and tennis — might be on the chopping block. So how can these sports get funding to continue to create Olympians? “The will is there, the money is not,” said Jack Swarbrick, the recently retired vice president and director of athletics at the University of Notre Dame, which sponsors some two dozen sports. “So it’s going to take creativity.”

There are TWO TYPES of athletic scholarships Head count scholarships and equivalency scholarships are two types of athletic scholarships offered by colleges Head count scholarships covers the full cost of tuition, room and board, books, and other expenses associated with attending college In sports that are considered "head count" sports (such as football, basketball, and volleyball), the number of scholarships available is limited by the NCAA, and each scholarship counts as one against the maximum number of scholarships a team can offer Equivalency scholarships, on the other hand, can be divided up among multiple student-athletes, & each scholarship can cover a portion of the total cost of attendance For example, a team might offer five equivalency scholarships for a sport like soccer, with each scholarship covering half of the cost of attendance In this case, the total amount of scholarship money awarded cannot exceed the total scholarship budget for the sport. ⚽️ operates on the equivalency model Sports Recruiting USA

The re-alignment of college sports in the US because of football & revenue sports conference changes, as well as Name, Image, Likeness (NIL), is one of the big undercurrents that will change the shape of the sporting landscape in the years to come. In 2021, 1,000 NCAA students, representing more than 100 countries, competed at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. That's 9% of all participating Olympians, who study, practice & compete in American universities. A few days ago, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) announced that they would discontinue the following sports from its intercollegiate sports programs: men’s rowing, men’s cross country, men’s track and field, women’s rowing, women’s track and field, and women’s swimming. Several Olympians have represented their countries while at LMU, and several coaches from LMU coached their Olympic teams also. This is another indication of the shift that is happening in collegiate sports in the US, which would naturally impact high school programs and eventually youth sports. The US' Olympic dominance is predicated on this talent development pyramid. Let's see where the dominoes fall, but this won't be the last of these types of announcements. https://lnkd.in/escbicsq
