"Let’s build something together. And let’s build someone up together,” says Eric Liu, founder of Citizen University. Liu is a public intellectual with nine books to his name as well as Ted Talks with more than 2 million views. In between his undergraduate days at Yale University and earning a Harvard Law School degree, he did a stint in Bill Clinton’s White House as a whiz kid speechwriter, returning later as a domestic policy aide. Drew Lindsay reports for #TheCommons on Liu's project bringing dozens of nonprofits together to build connection and support communities. Read more: https://bit.ly/3z7o1jg

The representation of Civil Rights history in the National Register of Historic Places continues to increase, thanks in part to projects funded through the African American Civil Rights and Underrepresented Communities grant programs. Even more sites will be added in the coming years. More than 55 new and active projects, led by nonprofits and governmental organizations across 31 States, will result in one or more listings in the next three years. What are some places in your community that these grants could document and list on the National Register? https://lnkd.in/gHStdfe7

We are watching this happen to many organizations trying to do the work in supporting a more equitable society. Now, funds are limited because the status quo wants to remain in power. These programs work and this work is necessary. This is not new, society works in patterns and now our work becomes even more important. Ultimately, grantmakers and funders, we see what society you want to really maintain. "Leaders of the racial justice movement know that the nation faces a formidable array of threats from a right-wing backlash that relies on censorship and authoritarianism. Instead of spending their energy, money, and time on unneccesary compliance, foundations can support the many campaigns, strategy sessions, research projects, and other work that will lead to true justice and eliminate the racist and exclusionary narratives that threaten democracy. At this pivotal moment in history, conceding is not an option." https://lnkd.in/g9e2qAY8

From planning to implementation, I work to create the conditions for learning and catalyze the revitalization of neighborhoods based on the model of community schools.
Hot off the press!! I co-authored a chapter in the newly released book "Social (In)equality, Community Well-being and Quality of Life." "CLCI is one of the few organizations across the US that has focused on both neighborhood revitalization and educational outcomes. Ultimately, this case study shows that school-based revitalization can succeed if the lead agency engages in meaningful community engagement, has a staff officer that acts as a “quarterback”, and brings together public, private, and non-profit agencies that provide the core management and planning competencies." On this Juneteenth, ChangeTheWealth.org commemorates the day in 1865, when freedom finally reached all enslaved African Americans. This day marks a critical moment in the fight for equality. Since that day, however, significant obstacles have continued to prevent wealth-building in Black communities. Promises of reparations like '40 Acres and a Mule' were broken….the Freedman's Bank, established to help freed slaves build financial security, failed and left many in financial ruin….and the more recent practice of Redlining systematically denied Black families the opportunity to own homes and build generational wealth. As we honor the past, ChangeTheWealth.org is dedicated to addressing these injustices and fostering economic empowerment for a more equitable future. Together, let’s continue the journey towards true economic freedom and justice for all. Together, let’s Change the Wealth! #Juneteenth #EconomicEmpowerment #ChangeTheWealth

Did you know that 37% of 4th graders in the United States read “below basic” according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. In simple terms, reading at a “below basic” level means you cannot read. Did you know that according to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 70% of all incarcerated adults cannot read at a fourth-grade level? (National Assessment of Adult Literacy, 2003). You can register to watch an important film about the literacy crisis in America on February 1st for free in honor of Black History Month. There is a small banner at the top of this webpage where you can register. This issue is very dear to my heart. We have to do better. Reading well is essential for a high quality of life. #scienceofreading #righttoreadfilm @righttoreadfilm
