Earlier this month, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) presented the new climate scenarios https://lnkd.in/eantnsd4 in which it was mentioned that sea level rise by the year 2100 could potentially reach up to 2.5 meters. In our recently completed study, 'Rotterdam Water City 2100,' conducted in collaboration with Deltares, we investigated that even in such extreme circumstances, there is still hope, and we can protect ourselves from the rising water. 'Rotterdam Water City 2100' presents a holistic vision for the Rhine-Meuse estuary region, where we not only keep water out of urban areas but also adapt to the water by providing more space for water and nature in the non-urban environment. We also highlight the potential to see the city more as a "sponge," focusing on capturing, storing, and maximum reusing water. That's the way to go! Now if we reforest or transition to agroforestry an area of about 250 million hectares of barren or deforested land in the tropical zone (where more sunlight comes in), the additional evapotranspiration, cloud formation and heat radiation out in to space will stop the planet from heating up further while the world is transitioning to a low carbon economy.

🌊 Celebrate World Ocean Day with BLUE4ALL 🌊 #BLUE4ALL, a Horizon Europe Ocean Mission project, is dedicated to #addressing #marineconservation and #restoration challenges across #Europe. We propose a new approach to Marine Protected Areas (#MPAs) that aligns with the #EUBiodiversityStrategy and national initiatives, placing stakeholders at the center to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed from the outset. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009. The Day recognizes the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity's common home and the need to protect her to enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity. Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet. Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action - a need to shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Protecting the planet is everyone's responsibility.
