What are the ways a company can announce it is shutting down? Is there a statutory SOP? We live in interesting times. When a CEO laid off 900 employees over a video call (after calling them Dumb Dolphins), it made the headlines the first time. It doesn't anymore. When Vishal Garg (credited with creating the uniquely alliterative cussword 'dumb dolphins') laid off 900 co-workers in 2022 that was headline news. When Frontdesk, a US-property tech company laid off 200 people over GoogleMeet in Jan 20204, there were no comets seen. There are anguished voices, of course, but the world reacts to news of virtual layoffs much like it does to the announcement of a new variant of Covid. We're anguished, but it's not new, it's not news. Ramesh Menon, CEO of Fever FM, operated by Hindustan Times announced three hours back that the company is shutting down Fever FM. How did he do it? Through a video on LinkedIn. From the looks of the comments under the post, it was news even to some of Fever FM's employees. Online news magazines are carrying it as today's Breaking News. "End for Radio is closer than you expect, says Ramesh Menon as he announces shutdown of fever FM" announced one. In the 32- second video, Menon says the decision comes after careful consideration of the evolving trends in the media industry. In the comments that followed, there's shock, there's awe, there's nostalgia, there's even an "oh no, what do I do?", but there are also remarks on a possible 'rebranding' strategy. That Fever FM is too good a business to shut down. That Fever FM is playing a 'shock and awe' strategy before shouting "Hey, We Pranked You". Probably as another video on LinkedIn. It's all complicated. I'm nostalgic for that simpler,pre-Prank era when one could tell if a company was up and functioning or just up to some mischief. Here are some Possible Factors Why the traditional radio era is ending: • Rise of Streaming Services: Music streaming platforms like Spotify, Gaana and YT Music have gained immense popularity by offering vast music libraries and personalized recommendations. • Growth of Podcasts: Podcast platforms like Pocket FM and Kuku FM are offering in-depth content and niche topics that traditional radio media can't offer. • Changing in Listeners Habits: Younger Generations like Gen Z are more inclined to consume audio on their SmartPhone, Laptop or other portable device rather than turning into a specific radio station. • Advertising Decline: Radio advertising revenue has been facing challenges due to competition from other Digital Audio Media Platforms. what are your thoughts on the future of radio?
