In a sector that has so many challenges, and at times feels like you are running in tar, it is important that we come together to celebrate the achievements. The wins are what keeps us going, what inspires us, what amazes us and shows why we do what we do. NCFE have been running our Aspiration Awards for a number of years now and they are a great opportunity to celebrate achievement. What I love about them is they don't just recognise someone who has got the highest qualification it recognises those who have overcome barriers to achieve their aims. For those who cannot take learning as a guarantee and is a struggle to accommodate for numerous reasons. Do you know a special someone in your centre, someone who has gone the extra mile, overcome huge barriers to achieve? Someone who is often the unsung hero but without them it just wouldn't work? Today, Chris uses her knowledge and skills working in Marketing, PR, and Event Production on brands like Red Bull, Jack Daniel's, Travelpayouts, Sportfive. She is also the Founder of a Latina Travel Blog, Girl Takes Mundo 🌎✨ 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛 Thanks to the DMSF scholarship, I felt I had the support of an organization that believed in my potential and provided me with the tools to succeed during my formative years. I saw this even in simple aspects, like maintaining a minimum GPA to keep the scholarship. I found myself exceeding that goal even in my university years. I also gained valuable public speaking skills from the summer bridge program, where we practiced speaking eloquently and comfortably without filler words, addressing peers professionally. The habits instilled through DMSF shaped how I present myself today. Through the high standards DMSF set, I learned that I can rise to challenges when given adequate encouragement and resources. Meeting DMSF’s expectations taught me to believe in my own capabilities. I’m grateful for the work ethic and self-confidence DMSF fostered in me. 💙For you, what does it mean to be a Murphy Scholar? 💛 To me, being a Murphy Scholar means defying the odds through hard work and self-belief. It means pursuing excellence in education despite financial barriers or early academic struggles. When I failed first grade as an English language learner, it could have set the tone for low expectations seeming inevitable. Being a Murphy Scholar, I was able to continue to prove this simple concept, with the right resources and encouragement one can excel. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Keep being yourself no matter what others think. Trust your instincts - you know deep down the path that's right for you. So awesome! By the time of our 30th anniversary next May we should pass the 60 milestone - that is 60 people with intellectual disabilities or autistic persons supported by LiveWorkPlay to move to a home of their own in the community. In some cases this is their first home outside of their family home, in other cases it is deinstitutionalization, supporting the person to leave a group living facility or other institutional setting. There is a lot more variety of that than people might expect, everything from hospital psychiatric wards, to the prison system, to domiciliary hostels, to long-term care facilities. Imagine leaving any of those environments and getting your own key to your own door. It is actually hard to imagine without some direct experience in those environments.

As an Executive Board member of Kids' Chance of Florida, it is with a grateful and humble heart to partner with industry leaders like One Call, providing an employee-funded scholarship to Florida student Montse Gallegos. In August 2022, Montse’s father, a warehouse manager passed away due to injuries following a workplace accident. Later that year, Montse’s mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. On the heels of an extremely tragic year, the Kids’ Chance of Florida/One Call scholarship is enabling her to attend college without the added stress of tuition payments. “Workplace injuries affect the whole family,” said One Call CEO Jay Krueger. “While trying to overcome grief, families are also forced to deal with mounting financial pressures. We are sensitive to these burdensome situations, which is why we want to be a part of the solution. This scholarship provides the children of critically or fatally injured workers with a path forward. We are proud to play a small role in helping them attain a much brighter future.” Kids’ Chance of Florida is a state chapter of Kids’ Chance of America, a charitable organization that is dedicated to making a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by workplace injuries by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals. Children of these workers can no longer count on the income of the injured or deceased parent. Accompanying the grief of loss, or the need to deal with an injured parent, is the increased likelihood that they cannot afford a college education. Since its founding in 1988, Kids' Chance of America has awarded more than 10,000 scholarships totaling more than $36 million.
