How do we get a nuanced picture of the complexities of the past with all its multiple angles? Here is an end-of-the-year #goodread: "The Arabs. A history", by Eugene Rogan - a book that offers a nuanced perspective of the arab history since Ottoman rule in the 16th century, its replacement by European colonies, decolonisation, and the rise of Arab nationalism - a story of repeated efforts of political elites to cope with externally imposed realities, alongside many attempts by the people to rebel against their oppressors. We need more such examples of #diverse and #inclusive history telling because knowledge really does impact our collective consciousness and it does influence our #empathy. This book is definitley one that can broaden perspectives beyond a predominantly eurocentric view of history.

I'm excited to share my review of the most fascinating book I've read in 2023, 'Sacred Foundations.' This book challenges the widely held assumption that war made the state. Anna Grzymaลa-Busse traces the origins of the European state in the Middle Ages by examining the role of the Roman Catholic Church. #statebuilding #religion https://lnkd.in/eS3uw9Y3
