A work in progress! Best-selling novelist, the Anglo-Canadian author Arthur Hailey (1920-2004), is recorded as having said of his fictional characters: "I don't think I really invented anybody. I have drawn on real life." When readers open a book by this author, they encounter ordinary people who have been placed, by the author, in extraordinary situations. Do you realise that Father God often does the same thing?! Read more at www.crazyrev.blogspot.com (a non-commercial blog!)

Writing fiction is a mystery to many people. Why would you write something that isn't true? My answer: Oh but it is! Author and Writing Coach extraordinaire Charlotte Rains Dixon sends her subscribers a weekly "Love Letter," and her most recent missive included these wise words: " . . . even though a novel is fictional, it’s also only worthwhile if it’s also true. And by that I mean that the characters have to experience things that change them and show them truths. It has to be emotionally true." (You can follow Charlotte on Substack here: https://lnkd.in/gA8jQ4S2) Another take on truth in fiction appears in a Suppressed Histories Archive article. According to the article, Anne Brontë, the lesser-known Brontë sister, defended her version of fiction as truth thusly: “When we have to do with vice and vicious characters, I maintain it is better to depict them as they really are than as they would wish to appear. To represent a bad thing in its least offensive light is doubtless the most agreeable course for a writer of fiction to pursue; but is it the most honest, or the safest? Is it better to reveal the snares and pitfalls of life to the young and thoughtless traveler, or to cover them with branches and flowers? O Reader! if there were less of this delicate concealment of facts – this whispering 'Peace, peace', when there is no peace, there would be less of sin and misery to the young of both sexes who are left to wring their bitter knowledge from experience.” https://lnkd.in/gc_42Vgn

I'd like to mention a wonderful book that I recently had the honour of copyediting. 'The Flitting' by Ben Masters is an autobiographical novel describing the relationship between a son and his dying father, who bond through their shared interest in butterflies. Into the moving account of his father's final months (I cried twice while working on the book!), the author skilfully weaves in discussions on pop culture, masculinity and literature, using butterflies as a metaphor. This book works brilliantly on many levels. https://lnkd.in/djyMk2T8
