🚨 HOW IS A 6-DAY WORK-WEEK STILL IN EXISTENCE??? 🚨 I was just reading a few hiring posts when I came across one that mentioned "6 days, work from office. No remote opportunity." Reading this made me super angry! Are these people living under a rock? Have they not seen how many people have quit the workforce post-pandemic for this exact reason? Are companies not realising the importance people have started putting on work-life balance and rejecting anything that threatens their peace of mind? When you don't evolve as a company, you lose out on evolved people. The world is moving towards a 4-day work-week and we Indians are not able to digest Mon-Fri! Who would win in a fight between the 4-day a week evangelists and the 5-day a week office working believers? Who knows? Who cares? They're both missing the point. Does either fix work ? Certainly helps simplify, and of course that's attractive to CEOs in a world of ever-increasing complexity. The 40-hour working week, a trade-off in a social contract that evolved in a world of predictable, standardised external markets. That world died years ago. I think people, or those with the privilege who can do so in their knowledge-based jobs, want flexibility and the ability to weave work around life. They want clear goals, an opportunity to grow, and the chance to work hard to get great results. Work matters to many people & organisations need to create value for markets to keep it afloat. Employees don’t want to be constricted by their employer, either through a 4-day working week or a mandated return to the office. Be ready or be square….. I'm a #fractionalHR Executive who works with CEOs and Founders and who will challenge blindly those following the bandwagon on this or any similar people-related matter. If you're churning out mandates to your team because you believe it simplifies your landscape, then I'd urge massive caution. There's no shortcut to developing an effective, principle-led People & Talent approach to your business. But it's certainly worth doing. Big Question (well, at least for me right now). Are employers recruiting for full-time roles willing to consider four days a week, if you're more than qualified/experienced for the role? As someone who values work-life balance, I've been wondering about this a lot lately. It's great to see companies adopting flexible work arrangements, but I'm curious if this extends to full-time roles as well. I believe that offering a four-day work week could not only improve employee morale and productivity, but also attract highly-qualified and experienced candidates who may be looking for a more balanced lifestyle. The topic of the allusive four-day work week isn't going away. Many want it, but are we willing to sacrifice to make it happen? The state of the workforce in the United States, barring legislation requiring us move to a four-day work week, feels too far off for us to see a four-day work week in my professional lifetime.   The vast majority of the workforce simply does not self-manage in a way to make it possible. I do, however, think that there will be a percentage of the workforce that is able to manage their work in a way that allows for more Friday flexibility. Moving to a four-day work week doesn’t mean employers will accept less work product and output, so how could it be possible?   Those who have a chance to make it work: 📌 Start early. 📌 Front-load each day and front-load the week. 📌 Complete admin work in the moment. 📌 Don’t schedule late-week internal meetings. 📌 Don’t schedule late-afternoon internal meetings.   Those who will have a difficult time making it work: 📌 Procrastinate. 📌 Slow to start the week on Monday. 📌 Let admin work drag and grow. 📌 Schedule late-week internal meetings. 📌 Schedule late-afternoon internal meetings.
