Public inquiries are set up to consider incidents of major public concern. Currently these include undercover policing, the Grenfell Tower fire, the Post Office Horizon scandal and the Covid-19 pandemic. A new House of Lords committee has been set up to consider the way these inquiries work. It will be exploring issues including the time and cost of inquiries. The Statutory Inquiries Committee wants your views on whether the system set up under the Inquiries Act 2005 is the best for running inquiries and how it could be improved. 📄 Find out more and get involved https://lnkd.in/evgMXXaj #HouseOfLords #PublicInquiries #GrenfellTower #PostOfficeHorizonScandal #COVID19

An evaluation report into the UK government-funded Grip programme and hot spot policing initiative designed to tackle serious violence has highlighted significant reductions in crime and potential savings, but has also warned that the approach is not a “quick fix” and requires commitment and buy-in from forces and leaders, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports. ❝When first piloted in Southend-on-Sea in Essex in 2020, the tactic resulted in a 73% drop in violent crime and 31% fall in street crime in the 20 highest crime hot spots on days when patrols visited, compared with days they did not.❞ ❝Analysis has not yet been undertaken to see if crime reduction in those areas led to dispersal to neighbouring areas or if there was a knock-on positive effect of more widespread deterrence.❞ ❝While hot spot policing is simple in concept, it is not simple to implement successfully; it requires a commitment to build up the right capability, particularly analytical and technological.❞ - Evaluation report on Grip and bespoke-funded hot spot policing [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/eJ6kUA-e #lawenforcement #policing #police #crime #violence UK Home Office

The Home Office published this today: https://lnkd.in/eaHR2UW7 Quick Summary: - Biggest ever (prove me wrong!) national exercise in observing and evaluating Hotspot Policing (i.e. when we send uniformed cops to high violence locations to deter crime by being seen). - Conclusion: it prevented hundreds of serious violent crimes and saved £millions. - Many forces participating shot for the moon with the evaluation methods. It's not perfect - there are many problems. - But look at the progress that's been made in developing evidence-based practice. Bravo to Home Office and all involved - this sets a new benchmark for the evaluation of policing activities.

In a response to an earlier article exploring the strategic direction of Police Scotland, former President of the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents Prof Niven Rennie argues that financial constraint – both in policing and across the public sector – is a key factor in determining the priorities for the force, and calls for support for Chief Constable Jo Farrell’s efforts to navigate these challenges, as well as a more unified public sector approach. ❝The root cause of these issues are largely financial, with £200 million slashed annually from Scotland’s policing budget since the national service’s inception – a total of £2bn lost.❞ ❝In truth, it is a more holistic review of public service provision that is necessary; minor adjustments within the criminal justice system will never be enough when most of the determinants of crime are beyond its reach.❞ ❝It should be recognised that poverty and inequality drive most of the problems we contend with as a society, and this is directly reflected in the ever-increasing public sector burden.❞ https://lnkd.in/eDnb9ez9 #lawenforcement #policing #police

New research by community safety professional Abu Ullah into the incidence of violence against women and girls in the London Borough of Sutton has highlighted the need for an evidence-based approach targeting hotspots to gain the most effective outcomes from overstretched police resources and reduce the threat to females, as he explained to Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons. ❝We were trying to tackle a problem we haven’t defined enough. This research provides an opportunity to target evidence-based interventions without additional resource allocation using problem-oriented policing.❞ - Abu Ullah, community safety professional ❝Collaboration between police, safeguarding boards, and schools are crucial for addressing the public place VAWG against 10 to 19-year-old girls, and young offenders responsible for this VAWG.❞ - Abu Ullah, community safety professional ❝The Home Office’s Safer Street funding must be allocated to ensure evidence-based targeting and testing is used to respond to the public place VAWG, thus maximising the crime reduction benefits from limited resources.❞ - Abu Ullah, community safety professional [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/erhRbbwx #lawenforcement #policing #police #crime #violence #violenceagainstwomen #research

In leadership the first priority has to be effective organisational function based on its prerequisites. Then you focus on delivery and priorities. You cannot deliver priorities if you do not have function. In leadership it is the defecit of knowledge of how function is achieved and maintained and the contribution of leadership to it that is the underlying problem. In Mindsmith Thinking we address the issue through our Intrinsic Leadership Programme.
Morning All, Policing Insight have published my article on the current turbulence around Scottish policing. After reflecting on the ridiculous 'Hate Monster' campaign, I demonstrate that there doesn't appear to be a strategy at the current juncture, and the tactics being deployed appear deeply flawed with many aspects of their impact apparently unmonitored. While the Chief Constable has rightly identified the courts and mental health provision as needing reform, the current initial single agency attempts to do so unfortunately appear doomed to fail, as have many similar endeavours in the past. In addition, the proposed 'proportionate approach' to the investigation of crime will damage public confidence, embolden criminals, and pile further pressure on the force's already overburdened contact, command and control division. A change of strategic direction is needed before the service starts to founder. Let's not just talk about focussing on crime but make that the service's core purpose, and roll out measurable initiatives to do so. While I encourage you to access the article via the Policing Insight link below, and to register for the rest of the sites excellent content, if for any reason you cannot a link to the article also follows in the comments below. https://lnkd.in/egugAf9X #police #scotland

A good step towards some proactive policing in our area. However, there is a long way to go. Having regular, visible patrols would go a long way toward deterring the high levels of criminal and anti-social behaviour in the region. As would investigating crimes such as shoplifting, vandalism and burglary rather than just issuing crime reference numbers. https://vist.ly/xj8i
