My toes curl with embarrassment when successful people say anything along the lines of “Just do these three things I did.” But in the age of “quiet quitting” and “nobody wants to work” memes, I’ve noticed that a lot of modern career advice is something more like anti-career advice. I’m ruffled by those who, having climbed the ladder with care and determination, turn around and claim that success is a sham and hard work is a sucker’s game. 1. Your career is not your life 2. Explore, then exploit- Quit any job that offers a moment’s frustration, and everything will work out in the long run. 3. Don’t do the job you want to tell other people you do. Do the job you want to do- Work is not a series of words on a LinkedIn profile. It’s a series of moments in the world. 4. Be happy, work with dedication- you will succeed 💯 5. This job search feels like a spiritual test, at times. Simply staying the course toward my objectives sometimes seems almost impossible. It’s also resulted in a LOT of reflection on who I am, who I’ve been, and what I value. 🙈I understand that LinkedIn is a necessary tool, but the amount of disingenuous influencer-style posts feels so loud and so toxic at times. 🐌↗️🐌↘️🐌↗️ Progress isn’t linear when you’re constantly refining what you’re looking for. The less I panic about employment, the more I am able to see what I can do and where it might be a good fit. ✨ While the process remains uncomfortable, I am aware of and appreciative of my ability to show up and be consistent for myself and to my commitments. Have you ever had your heart broken? 🙋🏻♀️ I have, many times, with romantic relationships, friendships, employers. And it’s hard. When you’re in it, it can feel like the most devastating thing. And months or years later, you realize that it was the best thing for everyone involved. One of the scariest things is that it can feel like you’re losing a part of your identity. Here are 3 things you can do today to navigate this fear around your identity and a job breakup: 1. Define your values. Figure out what matters to you the most and why. See if your current job/career is aligned to that. And if there’s big mismatch, then it’s a sign that your time has run its course. 2. Create a whole self identity. Zoom out from your job and begin to involve your hobbies, interests, community involvement, relationships, etc and step into the fact that you are so much more than just your job title. 3. Reach out for support. Get perspectives from friends, family, mentors, and a career coach. Connect with individuals who have gone through career breakups or switched jobs recently. I initially came to LinkedIn for career opportunities (queue the crickets🦗) The impact of the intangibles that have come along with building strong connections...... that's what’s keeping me here. 🎯 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 - I love how quick chats with connections can spark new ideas or solve a lingering problem. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 - Hearing about someone else's journey, especially when it intersects with mine, can be incredibly validating and motivating. Shared experiences are powerful! Does 2024 change everything? Nope! Ghosting still prevails! There is wide spread optimism and positive thoughts all over LinkedIn these days. The New Year is a perfect time to reflect, celebrate and add that does of positivity. But there are plenty of misconceptions when it comes to these beliefs 👉 I'll be a new person from today! 👉 My past is history now, time to smash through the future 👉 New year, new relationships Do you think any of these will hold? Have you managed to smash through the goals you set a couple of days ago? Habits and behaviours don't change in a day. And if you really want to be a better person, you don't have to wait for a new year to do that! When I kick started 2024, I was ready to continue on my mission to help job seekers. Alas... my first catch-up of the year ghosted me 👻 I totally understand there can be priorities overriding a commitment. But when you override it, make sure 👉 You let the other person know, it very rude to keep them waiting 👉 If you are unable to let them know on time, send them an apologetic message later! Don't be a person who wastes other's time, and doesn't give a sh*t about it! This is also a lesson to every job seeker who rants about ghosting. Unfortunately it's human nature, and you can't avoid it.
