Nice post David J Brammer, simply put, yet very effective. Industry (or sector) experience is like a 'comfort blanket' for hiring managers, but it's 'comfort' is illusory, counter-productive even. Firstly, as you point out there's the adapting to a new environment piece and it's important to frame this in terms of transferrable skills. Such that, previous experience elsewhere, enables adaptation and ultimately even evolution. Limit the background of candidates (or gene pool) and one limits the scope of fresh thinking that comes in, which makes any (business) evolution, much less likely. Secondly, limiting sector/industry background, actually flies in the face of DE&I, as it's a limiting criterion, not an enabling one. Simple as that. When I was in search and clients said 'they knew people', we used to say, 'do you want the best person you know, or the best person in the market'. Paraphrasing that leads to, 'do you want the best person in your sector or the best person that's out there'? Both of them will be good, I don't doubt that, but I suspect the latter will bring more perspective and thus more value. The sad thing about this, given the current TA market, is that it takes more resources to widen a 'pool', since by definition, it will require more work, to look at more candidates and run more processes. So I doubt any real change, any time soon, but it's worth bearing in mind, the next time you're considering a 'person spec' and the question of sector/industry 'rears it's head'! Do you have 4+ years of work experience in an #unrelatedsector and are you looking to move to the #socialsector? Well, this is a little more challenging especially since at this point you may not want to take up any and every role that comes your way just to get an inroad to the social sector. And you may also want to ensure a minimal pay-cut (if at all). Getting an in with a domain related role would be easiest at this point but also the hardest to get out of once accepted. It’s likely that after working for several years, you are now good at accounts, marketing or whatever else your domain of specialisation is. To make a case for yourself to get access to roles that go beyond your technical skill set (and for an org to accept that), it would be helpful to think about other transferable skills such as team management, process setting, reporting, client servicing etc. and shortlisting roles where those would be valuable too. How to get there - - Start by taking on some additional work either within your current workplace’s CSR team (example - help organise a tree plantation drive with employees or raise funds for a cause the org is supporting) or volunteer in your own time at a neighbourhood NGO to gain an understanding of the grassroots - NGOs always want the help they can get and they rarely turn down pro-bono work - This is a great opportunity for you to speak with stakeholders across an org and help bring your strengths to address problem areas for them - Try looking for social sector orgs that work in cause areas aligned with work you’ve done so far (if you worked in banking maybe you can look at orgs running/supporting financial inclusion programs). Your knowledge of the industry will be valued here. - If you have the time to spare and willingness to forgo some income, you could also consider a professional course/Masters. This opens campus recruitment opportunities up to you. However, if the only reason behind doing a higher education course is to make the switch, I would say try the other routes first. For those with 8-10 years of experience, two skills would be very valuable in the social sector - team management skills and ability to build partnerships (financial and non-financial too) and would make your switch easier!
