📢 The latest 'Children's Media Lives 2024' from Ofcom, via Revealing Reality, heightening again the need to define what we mean by social media in any discussion of it. 🖋 "Children are primarily looking at visual media – images and videos – not interacting with other people. The content they see in their feeds is increasingly professionalised and commercialised – as social media has become bigger and bigger business, it’s changed the way people use it." 🔎 These important reports do highlight the critical need for real time monitoring of impacts, and the challenge of longitudinal research. ✔ Much to digest, but the 5Rights report, from Alexandra Evans and colleagues, and its reference to cumulative harms is spot on: 💰 "Most of what children now see on social media was created by someone with the deliberate goal of capturing attention, garnering ‘likes’ or building a following – and it’s often their job to do this."

💭 Could public participation be the key to a fair and trustworthy benefit system? 💡As part of our new blog series, Dr Louise MacAllister reflects on two projects that demonstrate how public participation is essential for designing an effective benefit system. Centring the needs, knowledges, and experiences of people that a system is designed to help, ensures that important elements are not overlooked, priorities are met, and everyday challenges are recognised and overcome through design and deliberation. We know this creates policies that work better on the ground. But what is required to arrive at implementable recommendations? Here are three vital elements: 1️⃣ Bring together the right people: it’s important not just to recruit people who want to have a say on the topic but to ensure that participants reflect demographic diversity and a range of different experiences. 2️⃣ Be real about the challenge: when participants are aware of the constraints and opportunities they can build recommendations that fit within these and can be implemented successfully. 3️⃣ Allow plenty of time for facilitated deliberation: when participants have time to deliberate they move beyond ‘front of mind’ or ‘knee jerk’ responses and develop thoughtful recommendations. Thursday, March 21, 2024, I was opportune to be featured on a TV program "Your Image" on Ogtv. Together with other guests, we engaged in a thought-provoking discussion centred on the intertwined themes of youth, social media, and image issues, aiming to unravel their profound impact on the youth. During the discourse, we delved into the multifaceted influence of social media on the lives of young individuals. While recognizing the positive attributes such as fostering connections, sharing information, and providing avenues for self-expression, we also confronted the potential drawbacks and hurdles inherent in social media usage. A pivotal point of emphasis was the imperative of fostering digital literacy and critical thinking skills among the youth. I firmly believe that by arming them with the requisite tools to navigate the digital sphere judiciously, we can empower them to discern, mitigate risks, and engage constructively with social media platforms. Regrettably, time constraints limited the depth of our exploration. Nevertheless, we are eagerly anticipating the continuation of this vital dialogue next week, on Thursday, March 28. This ongoing conversation seeks to further dissect these crucial issues, aiming to foster a more informed and empowered youth populace in their digital endeavours.
