As researchers, our environmental footprint is a responsibility we must take seriously. During the master's internship of Géraldine Menoud, we undertook to quantify as accurately as possible the plastic consumption and the carbon footprint of the experiments conducted during her 4-month internship in our lab. The experiments and their experimental designs were optimized as much as possible to limit the use of consumables (and there is still possibilities for improvement). The results: 30 kg of plastic, equivalent to approximately 72 kg CO2 eq. By carefully considering the environmental impact of the materials we use and adopting more sustainable practices, we can make meaningful progress towards reducing the carbon footprint of laboratories, and this must become a priority. Excited to share that I've successfully completed my internship at the National Productivity Council. During this time, I had the incredible opportunity to contribute to two impactful projects: Project 1: Environmental and Social Impact Audit for Biosafety Labs under the PM-ABHIM Scheme Objective: Conduct a comprehensive environmental and social impact audit for six biosafety lab infrastructure projects funded by the World Bank. Responsibilities: 🌟 Developed and integrated environmental auditing checklists for biosafety laboratories. 🌟 Conducted extensive research on air quality, fugitive emissions, microbial management, and Autoclave, Incinerator emissions (ash, SO₂, NOₓ). 🌟 Evaluated air quality parameters (PM10, PM2.5, NOₓ, SO₂, CO, VOCs), water quality (pH, DO, BOD, COD, heavy metals, microbial contamination), soil quality (pH, heavy metals, organic matter, nutrient content), and noise levels (ambient noise vs. regulatory limits). 🌟 Conducted data analysis using STATA on air, water, and soil quality. 🌟 Ensured compliance with emission standards and waste management protocols. 🌟 Coordinated with team members for data collection, site inspections, and stakeholder engagement. 🌟 Compiled and structured content for the project proposal to align with environmental and social standards. Project 2: Circular Economy Focused Projects Objective: Develop ideation and framework for Circular Economy focused projects. Responsibilities: ♻️ Created frameworks for Circular Economy Groups among concentric and value chain-based enterprises. ♻️ Developed a programme of action for Ministries to enable the application of Circular Economy techniques. ♻️ Worked on applications such as Product Composition Declaration, resource embedding, and emissions embedding. ♻️ Facilitated the adoption and application of Circular Economy techniques among industrial units through structured programmes of action. This summer, we are thrilled to feature our incredible interns in a Q&A series highlighting their hard work and contributions to key projects. Kicking us off is Sarah Eppley, a Battery Testing and Analytics Intern who has been a valuable asset to our technology team.   1) Why did you choose to intern at Nanoramic? Sarah: I was very excited to get the opportunity to intern at Nanoramic this summer. I have been interested in renewables and energy storage for a long time and was eager to get outside the classroom and see how they played out in industry and what I could contribute. Nanoramic itself is in a really impressive spot working on batteries that can deliver on performance while eliminating harmful environmental components like NMP and PFAS. I, personally, think these considerations are so important for the future and wanted to learn and help out as much as possible.   2) What have you been working on this summer? Sarah: Over the course of the summer, I have been lucky to get to learn the battery fabrication process from slurry, to electrode, to cell. Most of my work now focuses on the cell testing and data analysis side working with my supervisor, Timothy Chu. I really enjoy the diversity of my days here, I love being in the lab and working with the various stages of the process and then getting to see how changes play out on the testing side.   3) What has been the most challenging aspect of your internship so far? Sarah: The most challenging aspect thus far has been the knowledge gap entering the well-developed battery field. Working here I am surrounded by an extremely knowledgeable team, for which I am very grateful, that has taught me about batteries and showed me that I still have a lot to learn. Working on the data analysis end specifically has forced me to dive deeper into the understanding behind topics, as it is not enough just to make a graph. You have to know what it means in a given context. Between working in the lab, learning from colleagues’ updates in our weekly technical sync, and asking a lot of questions, I continue to learn and grow everyday.   4) What are your goals for the future and how do you see this internship helping you achieve them? Sarah: At my core, I love nature and I believe in a better future. We have a long way to go in terms of a completely sustainable and equitable society but I feel it is my responsibility to further this movement. Through my work at Nanoramic I have already gained so much knowledge about batteries and their various applications. Almost more importantly though, I have had the opportunity to experience working on a team of dedicated, intelligent, and kind individuals who inspire me to work harder and study more. I am happy to share that I have successfully completed an APR.Intern project titled "Contributing to Green Shipping Through Coastal Ocean Modelling’ with Tidetech. Here's a brief summary of the project: "The imperative for green shipping, driven by environmental concerns, requires innovative approaches to optimize maritime transportation. This project explores the critical role of coastal ocean modelling in promoting sustainable shipping practices, particularly by providing accurate tidal information. Accurate tidal data not only minimizes waiting times for vessels entering and exiting major shipping ports, but also reduces fuel consumption, lowers CO2 emissions, and improves overall efficiency. The study assesses whether a hydrodynamic model-based solution can provide accurate tidal predictions compared to observations and official tidal predictions." This internship provided me with hands-on experience tackling real-world challenges, specifically through applying high-resolution coastal ocean modelling to promote green shipping. I am grateful to APR.Intern, Tidetech, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Melbourne, Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute for this opportunity.
