A must read good news story about compassionate capitalism at it's finest... "People tend to put 'housing' and 'education' in separate social categories, but both are strongly interconnected and can be almost viewed as one. High performing schools are typically located in affluent, stable housing communities, and low performing schools are typically located in poor, marginalized transitional communities. Sadly, it’s the low-income families with few housing options, that end up living in low-performing elementary school districts, despite the heroic efforts (and budgets) of educators. Why is housing and education so inter-connected? The main answer is student mobility (transiency). Student mobility is the movement of children during the school year, and housing is the major trigger of student mobility. If a landlord significantly raises rents beyond affordability, the parents only option is to move. Student movement 2-3 times a school year is becoming a norm as the increased cost of housing forces parents to chase affordable housing options outside their school district. Research has found students generally lose about three months of reading and math learning each time they switch schools. In fact, in a study of 13,000 Chicago students, University of Chicago researcher David Kerbow found those who had changed schools four or more times by 6th grade, that their classmates—and students in schools with high churn were a year behind those in more stable schools by 5th grade." https://lnkd.in/e_uFQyMb #Marjy #CompassionateCapitalist"
