🎶 Spotlight on Stage, Capturing the Pulse of Live Music
I've been taking photos of concerts and theatre shows for ten years. It's always been about getting the perfect shot, even when there's hardly any light.
On theatre stages 🎭 , most of the time, it was tough. The lights were dim, and my camera had to work hard without making the photos too grainy. Using a high ISO meant less sharp images back then, so I always tried to keep it under 3200.
Like this photo of Kian Pourtorab from Comment Band in 2012, concerts are a whole different story. The stages are usually bursting with light, making it a dream for photographers like me. . 🎸
But capturing great live stage photos isn't just about snapping away. It would help to be hyper-aware of the shifting lights and ready to tweak your settings immediately. Positioning is critical, finding that sweet spot where the composition comes alive. And after the show? That's when the critical eye comes in, selecting the shots that truly encapsulate the energy and spirit of the performance.
Live events demand your full attention; a split second can hold a once-in-a-lifetime shot. Being truly present is essential, or you risk missing those irreplaceable moments that define an event.
I always love getting up close to the stage. This shot is unique because I wanted to try something different that night. It's one of my favourites, and it shows Kian lit up by the stage lights, lost in the music.
I captured this moment with my trusty EOS 5D Mark II, a camera that's been with me through thick and thin.
