Teachers warn families hitting ‘brick wall’ when trying to get help for #children A report last month by the Centre for Young Lives and the Child of the North multi-university research programme warned that the NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Camhs) are buckling under the strain of a “national epidemic” of #childrensMentalHealth problems. It revealed that, at the end of last year, 32,000 children had been waiting more than two years to be seen. Two-thirds of children were not directed to any form of interim support, it said, with #self-harm and #suicide while they waited “too familiar”. Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza compared the current #children mental health figures to a tsunami. In the latest report published last week, it shows that almost one million children and young people in England were referred to #mentalhealth services last year - that’s 8% of children in England. 🤯 The commissioner's report also finds: 👉🏻 270,300 children and young people are still waiting for mental health support after being referred in 2022-23. 👉🏻 372,800 had their referral closed before accessing #support. 👉🏻 Almost 40,000 children waited more than two years for mental health treatment. 👉🏻 31,000 children reached a point of mental health crisis last year. We need fresh, long-term thinking when it comes to children’s mental and emotional health and #wellbeing. Much of this work must be done upstream, creating an environment and a world – both online and offline – where children grow up feeling happy, safe and supported. This means every child feels loved and nurtured, lives free from poverty, and is able to focus on learning. According to a report by the Telethon Kids Institute, eight suicide hotspots have been identified. The report links the high suicide rates directly to poor access to mental health services, which are stretched to the limit post-Covid. We need feet on the ground in regional communities, particularly specialists trained in pre-suicide prevention and postvention support, There’s a feeling of hopelessness in these areas which is only exacerbated when support can’t be readily accessed. There are solutions to this complex problem. More funded placement of mental health professionals would alleviate the overstretched system, If they can’t be recruited from the cities, then we must create our own. We have been focused most on services to address this crisis. And while access to and equity for appropriate #mentalhealth services should remain a top priority, it alone is simply not enough. 🛑 We can't only treat our way out of this crisis. 🛑 Every school and community needs #mentalhealthliteracy (MHL) education. With MHL, people learn how to support their own mental health as well as the mental health of those in their care. They can challenge #stigma, recognize signs of concerns early, and address them appropriately. MHL offers people the language and the confidence to engage in conversations they may otherwise avoid.
