Why wouldn't you hire a transitioning teacher? I don't know, but you'll probably end up regretting it! Despite what a lot of headlines might lead some to believe, teaching is not a job "just anyone" can do. It's more than just earning a BA/BS degree and passing a background check... The truth is those transitioning teachers are more than likely going to end up being a huge asset to your team. While they might only have "experience" in one area or field, it's those durable skills that really set them apart. 🍎 Adaptability and Resilience: Teachers are accustomed to adapting to varying educational standards, technologies, and student needs. Their experience in navigating these changes smoothly translates into an incredible ability. 🍎 Strong Communication Skills: Teachers excel in communicating complex ideas in clear, understandable ways. They are skilled at engaging diverse audiences, making them invaluable in roles that require effective communication, whether it's in training, customer service, or leadership. 🍎 Teamwork and Collaboration: Working in education necessitates constant collaboration with colleagues, parents, and administrators. Recently came across a scenario where a 38yr old professional, with 12 years at her company, was performing the same role as a 25yr old graduate but they were earning 20k more annually. As a Student Success Expert in #MetroAtlanta, I am #opentowork in the following roles: #programcoordinator, #programspecialist, #programmanager, #curriculumdeveloper or anything in the #studentsuccess field. Here are three recent positions I’ve held and the impact that I’ve had: 1. Program Manager at HUMBLE Tutoring: I create virtual tutoring programs that help Black and brown scholars close Math and Literacy learning gaps while also gaining skills to become college-and-career ready. In this role, I also manage #curriculumdesign for all academic programs and virtual courses. One achievement is reenrolling 100% of our scholars who completed our Spring program into our Fall program. 2. Special Education Academic Interventionist at the Kindezi Schools: I differentiated instruction for #tier2 and #tier3 scholars by providing #scienceofreading based practices that I learned from the #ortongillingham approach. I monitored and entered data weekly to track progress. One achievement was that a scholar improved by 86% in 6 weeks- a #data point that had not been seen before! 3. #dualenrollment Enrollment Student Advisor at #georgiastateuniversity: In this role, I developed and managed an #Excel databases with 1,200 dual enrollment students’ information to streamline processes. I also worked in #GAFutures #Banner #Slate to monitor funding applications and remove academic holds to allow students to register for classes. One achievement involved my #caseloadmanagement and #timemanagement skills as I absorbed my colleague's caseload for a three week period. As I pursue new opportunities to transition into a college career coach or a customer success manager role, fueled by my passion for guiding individuals towards their goals and my dedication to fostering success at every step of their journey, I have begun to realize just how many diverse skills school counselors have, and how well they align with the new roles that I am pursuing: 🔹 Active Listening & Empathy: As a school counselor, understanding students' needs and concerns was paramount. This skill translates seamlessly into understanding the unique needs of college students and customers, ensuring they feel heard and supported. 🔹 Goal Setting & Achievement: I've guided students through setting academic and personal goals, helping them navigate their paths to success. This directly aligns with helping college students chart their career paths or ensuring customers achieve their desired outcomes with products or services. 🔹 Problem-Solving & Conflict Resolution: Managing diverse situations and resolving conflicts in a school setting has equipped me with strong problem-solving skills. These are crucial for addressing challenges and finding solutions in both college career coaching and customer success management. 🔹 Communication & Collaboration: Effective communication with students, families, and staff was essential in my role. In a college career coach or customer success manager position, this ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively will help build strong relationships and foster a supportive environment. 🔹 Program Development & Implementation: I've designed and implemented programs to support student development. This experience is valuable in creating and managing initiatives that support student career readiness or enhance customer success. 🔹 Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilizing data to track student progress and outcomes has been a key part of my role. In a new capacity, this skill will help in making informed decisions to optimize student career services or customer satisfaction strategies. I left the classroom over six years ago. I started teaching through Teach For America right out of college, so it was the only career path I knew. I was a middle school math teacher, and in many ways I loved teaching. I built strong relationships with my students and their families, and coworkers turned into life long friends. I still keep in touch with many of my former students and I have immense gratitude for the life lessons, community, and perspective teaching gave me. However, burnt out and mentally exhausted, I knew I needed to see what else was out there. I cared about education so I wanted to stay in the field, but I had no idea how to pivot. My job search spanned Client Success, Sales, Marketing, School Guidance Counselor, Charter School Network Staff, Recruiting. I ended up getting an offer at an Education Technology company. I started in sales, and moved up and around both within the sales team and client success department, and as an individual contributor and people manager. Years later I pivoted again, joining a corporate wellness start up as an Account Executive. These roles allowed me to preserve some of what I loved about teaching while also offering flexibility, stability, and growth. I attribute my success in these roles largely to my time in the classroom. Teaching is a deeply personal profession. It became such a part of who I was, and I had a hard time parting from that identity. ‘I used to be a teacher’ is how I’d often start my answer when asked what I did for work. It felt relevant, part of my story. And in some ways it still is. In the years since, I’ve mentored and coached dozens of teachers, similarly ready for a change but not sure where to begin. It started out with an occasional LinkedIn message from another teacher, reaching out asking for advice in their job search. Or a text message from a friend of a friend, hoping to pick my brain about my transition into edtech. Soon I was taking weekly phone calls. Figuring out where to go from teaching, especially when you’ve been in a school setting your entire career, is incredibly challenging and not at all straightforward. the comments confirm, teachers are SO valuable. Teaching has prepared me with transferable, hands-on skills, that are not taught in a text book or training module, including (but certainly not limited to): 🍎 Having difficult conversations. Last week I had to tell a parent their student is at risk of failing my class and not graduating high school. With the help of a translator, we dialed the student in and dug deep to discover the root cause of the problem, and determine next steps. 🍏 Leading with empathy. I woke a student up yesterday and instead of reprimanding him I asked, "Are you okay?" He told me he's working two jobs to provide for his 2 year old daughter. We designed a progress plan to help him reach his graduation goals. 🍎 Being an authentic team player. Yesterday, in the classroom next door, we had a substitute for a long-term substitute, for a teacher out on family leave. The class was absolute chaos. I printed worksheets for the class and popped in to make sure they were on task and that the substitute was ok. Most teachers I know have master's degrees, numerous certificates, and even doctorates, but we all know that we learn the most from the genuine human experiences we are exposed to daily.

It's crunch time in teaching. This includes senior leaders looking around for something else, or those who want a senior job. For those who don't know May 31st is the deadline for resignations. In effect it is also the hiring deadline for schools. If you have been thinking about it, but not yet applied, what is holding you back? The same applies if you went for one or two, weren't successful, and then retreated. It might BE late right now, but it's not TOO LATE. Schools who are hiring for senior positions right now are nervous. Have they missed out on finding anyone appointable? Will they be going without for a term and then try again in September? You may be able to solve your problem and theirs. Have a look today. Make that phone call. Get your application together. Be ready for the interview invitation at a moment's notice.
