Meet Joel, who, alongside his wife Elizabeth, celebrates 35 years of marriage and raises four grown sons, two of whom are married. Their eldest, along with his spouse, recently relocated to Kansas City, MO, after moving from Dubai just last month, bringing along their two sons, aged 5 and 2. Their second son and his wife reside in Topeka, KS, both working as surgical nurses, having forged a friendship while working together in a UAE hospital. Joel stands out as the sole employee who has worked across three continents – Asia, Europe, and North America. Joel's journey with The Maschhoffs began in February 2022 when he joined as the Associate Director of Production in Great Plains. Pioneering the People Development program within Great Plains fills Joel with pride. He introduced GROW (Getting Ready for Opportunities at Work) for Animal Caregivers showing leadership potential, LEAD (Leaders in Excellence, Accountability & Development) tailored for current Team Leads, and ACHIEVE (Amplifying Competence in Harnessing Innovation, Empowerment, Values & Excellence) for Farm Managers. For Joel, personal and professional growth intertwine through proactive participation in training and leadership programs, adapting to various leadership styles to empower his team. "I derive immense satisfaction from witnessing our team evolve into better leaders. True leadership lies in fostering more leaders," reflects Joel. His advice to new hires is to remain open to change, embracing innovative paradigms, and learning from them, recognizing the diversity of systems and approaches. Drawing from Jeff Stevens' insights in "The Heart of Business," Joel emphasizes the danger of prioritizing profit over a higher purpose within an organization. He advocates for leading with a greater mission, exemplified by The Maschhoffs' commitment to "Feeding Families and Building Communities," fostering a sense of collective purpose beyond individual gains.

pets, Pets, PETS ... are they similar or different to human team & group dynamics? This week I am pet-sitting for some good friends as they are on vacation. 3 lovely cats, 2 adorable dogs plus my golden retriever for a total this week.. I noticed at the beginning of the week the two younger 1-year-old kitties were hiding out to see what the mix and dynamics were going to be As I settled in and did my leadership coaching work, I thought to myself, how is this group of pets similar or different to human team & group dynamics? There are two teams, one cats and the other dogs. They seem to have social behaviors similar to human groups. Are the days went on, the pets broke into two groups of dogs vs cats, similar to human teams of we vs they. Then a couple of days later there was a homogeneous effect where the dogs and cats intertwined with each other through the days. Reminder me of team and groups dynamics in humans too. Most interesting was at night time when pets were slipping in their resting positions including plenty of snoring. I am curious about your experience of pets intermingled in your lives aka team & group dynamics.

Mentorship Transforms Veterinary Practices 🐾 In the heart of every thriving veterinary practice lies a core of shared knowledge and support. Mentorship - it's the lifeblood of professional growth, guiding new vets to surmount the steep learning curve with confidence. 💡 Embracing the role of mentorship is more than an investment in individual growth; it's a catalyst for recruitment success. A practice boasting a robust mentoring culture doesn't just fill vacancies. It attracts passionate talent, eager to join a community dedicated to nurturing professional journeys. Here's why mentorship is instrumental: 🌱 Growth: Initial years in vet practices are foundational. Seasoned mentors provide guidance, turning challenges into growth spurts, leaving no vet behind. 📈 Excellence: Experienced guidance helps less seasoned vets refine their skills, resulting in higher standards of animal care and client satisfaction. 🔄 Retention: A supportive environment fosters loyalty. Mentors reduce turnover by instilling a sense of belonging and purpose. But how can mentorship shape recruitment? ✨ Attract Top Talent: Mention 'mentorship' in your recruitment ads, and you'll pique the interest of those who value professional development. 🔎 Selectivity: Practices with mentorship programs can afford to be choosy, attracting candidates who are a perfect cultural and skill fit. 🤝 Engagement: By involving existing staff in mentor roles, you boost morale and foster an ecosystem where everyone is a stakeholder in the collective success. One of the top reasons our job seekers give us for moving on from their current role? 'Lack of mentorship'. It really does matter. #Mentorship #VeterinaryPractice #RecruitmentExcellence

Helping veterinary leaders overcome the challenges of practice ownership | Scaling our own end of life care team by seeking out the most caring and empathetic vets
Just had to explain "type 2" fun to my boss while...funny because that's pretty much what we're offering to our clients... If you're not an outdoors freak or otherwise familiar with the concept it sums up the experiences that are tough and hard going while you're in them but offer a reward at the end erases those memories, leaving you with a sense of achievement and a desire to do it all over again. Type 2 fun is the learning sweet spot. It challenges you without putting you in danger - it’s often uncomfortable but in ways that also make you feel alive, standing with a grin on top of the mountain you've just scaled. When we work with veterinary practice owners to address the issues that are holding them back, they will often go through a difficult phase as they pull apart and reset their teams and processes. It's a ripping off the band aid moment. It's certainly not fun at the time but the rewards to their practices and employees afterwards are always worth the effort. Running a vet practice is rarely going to be the hedonistic "type 1" fun but we can certainly help bring the benefits of the other kind! Register with me for a discovery call to learn more about our business support services or visit www.drdavenicol.com to learn more. #veterinaryleadership #leadership #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #type2

How To Stop My Dog From Running Out The Door On a daily basis at our dog training camp in Alaska, we work with dogs so they stop running out of the door. This is what we call “door manners.” In my opinion, teaching your dog door manners is essential for numerous reason, you will see I discuss this in our numerous training articles. Importance of Door Manners: Pack Leadership: It teaches your dogs that you are the first one to do everything. You go inside first, you go outside first, you go up the stairs first, you go down the stairs first, etc. This is a very simple thing you can do to help show pack leadership with your dog. As I explain to our clients, “You never see pictures of ducks lined up and the mother is in the back of the line. You never see packs of lions and the biggest alpha lion is behind all of the small ones.” Why? Because it’s very basic pack leadership, the alpha male and dominant member is always in the front. Have you ever worked with a client who changed your life? This is something I wish coaches and consultants would talk about more often. I believe that we usually get as much out of our partnerships as the clients do, and should share how lucky we are to do the work we do. One of those "life changing" clients for me is *Kerri Nelson of Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG). In 2022, my dog had an unfortunate incident at a pet groomer, and I had to take her to VEG, where I was supported by Kerri and her team. The care was so exceptional that I left the clinic in happy tears, and later sent Kerri a thank you email. Kerri wrote back immediately, thanking me for the positive feedback and said: "I see that you're a coach. Can we work together?" 🎤 Since then, I've had the honor of coaching Kerri's friends, relatives, and colleagues. When my dog (Lucy) passed away last year, Kerri was my rock. Needless to say, this woman has empowered and blessed me in ways I could never have imagined. Relationships matter. And I'm so proud of the way Kerri and I have invested in our partnership. This month, I finally got to recognize Kerri as a "Leader to Learn From" in the The Thirlby Company LLC newsletter. It was the coolest interview and I'm so happy to honor the incredible leader, veterinarian, and human that Kerri is: https://lnkd.in/ginwttub How can you show more appreciation to the people you LOVE working with? *Client story and photo used with permission. #leadership #leaderstolearnfrom #lifecoaching #leadershipcoaching #consulting #personalgrowth #relationshipsmatter

Figured my network was overdue for an update on what I’ve been up to - this year has been an eventful one. We sold Neo Bites in May. We won't be retiring from the exit, but we’re proud of what we built and we're excited to see where the new owners take it. Neo Bites was one of the first three pet food brands to utilize cricket protein, and we were America's first carbon negative pet food company. It was my first run at entrepreneurship - I learned a ton, made plenty of mistakes, etc. It was an exciting chapter in my career and I'll miss it, but I'm even more pumped for everything we're currently building. Dog People Certified® is cranking. This was born out of our time with Neo Bites. We were hosting local events at bars in Austin and the owners started asking us to make treats for them. It's been just about a year since we started directing our attention to DPC, and we now make custom dog treats for more than 300 businesses around the country, from Hawaii to Maine. We work with everything from major hotel brands, to mom-and-pop cafes, to veterinary clinics. If you're traveling with your dog hit me and up and I'll share our client map so you can find our treats. We’re growing MoM, and we’re ramping up growth efforts with a goal to hit 1k clients by the end of 2024. We're profitable and my god does it feel better than worrying about our "burn" every waking hour.... This year has also served as an intro to an entirely new industry for me: accounting & finance. I started supporting the owners of an accounting firm I know in Houston in January. I've basically been acting as a management consultant, helping out with operations, biz dev, and innovation. In just a handful of months, changes I’ve implemented have resulted in better internal processes, more revenue, better margins, and fewer headaches for the owners. I have since partnered with the owners of this firm, launching Raft in June.
