You really can't beat a face to face meeting! Actually getting to know people, brainstorming and sharing ideas. There is a place for online meetings, but the start of a project really benefits from being in the same room. #facetofacemeetings #networking #education
What a great start to the L2 Animal Care Assistant apprenticeship redevelopment! We met with a range of employers and representatives for the providers and EPAO's to outline the occupational duties - and absolutely smashed it! We have some great ideas on how to move the development forward - just need to get the IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) approval first! “Guess what we get to do today?” my mentor will say “Lemme guess, lemme guess, tests for salmonella?” “Bingo!” If I so dare say, by the end of my internship I am going to be a salmonella master. The Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory receives a wide variety of samples from around Utah and occasionally out of state. Out of all the samples we receive, we by far get the most test requests for salmonella, currently speaking at least. So far, for the first couple of weeks at the lab, I have become a salmonella test expert. I've used HE, XLT, Brilliant green, THI, LIA, VITEK, API, you name a test. Tests for salmonella have become so frequent that it has become somewhat of a joke to me my mentor Chani Christensen. Regardless, it is a lot of fun and I am getting better and better at analyzing test results, remembering test names and what they test for, and conducting said tests. Overall is has been a lot of fun. Everyone there is super nice and willing to let me observe what they are doing, let me ask questions, and even let me do whatever test they are doing at the moment. I'm glad I have been given the opportunity to be a student intern! It has benefited me to have the chance to really get an understanding of what actually goes down in a lab. #nebointerns #utahcteinternships #internships #shhsinterns

Great news for animal care sector. For contacts in the animal care who would like to be involved in the level 2 animal care assistant (England) review, please see the post below. #apprenticeships #animalcare #employerengagement
L2 Apprenticeship Redevelopment Update: We are pleased to announce that we have been given the initial go ahead from IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) to submit a proposal to develop two separate level 2 apprenticeships: ⭐ Level 2 vet care assistant ⭐ Level 2 animal care and welfare assistant This is a really positive step which will ensure the vet care assistant can cover the necessary technical and science knowledge needed for this sector, whilst still ensuring high standards of care for those doing the animal care and welfare assistant apprenticeship. We will now form a separate trailblazer group to develop the vet care assistant proposal and will be looking for additional employers to support this development. If you are interested in being involved please email Emma Potts on [email protected] by 20/03/24. If you would like to be involved in the Animal Care and Welfare Assistant development please email [email protected] #apprenticeships #animalwelfare #animalcare

Former Exec now Veterinary Technology Student at University of Queensland 🐄🐴🐕 Everything is possible. New career at 60+ 💪
Practical placements are a vital part of many university degrees - I have always been a huge advocate for them - and over many years developed several internship programs with a view to providing students with the most valuable and best possible experiences during their time with us. Over the last two weeks the boot was very much on the other foot as I was the student on practical placement as a requirement for my Veterinary Technology degree at the The University of Queensland; and it reminded me very strongly of how important and career shaping these experiences can be. Like many students I have an idea of what I might like to do once I graduate however nothing beats hands on experience in a real work environment to test the waters and to learn if your chosen pathway is actually right for you. How workplaces treat their students can also lead to them embracing the profession with enthusiasm or quitting in despair. Over the last two weeks I was fortunate enough to have an exemplary experience at the Redlands Veterinary Clinic. It is an exceptionally busy practice, but despite all the hustle and bustle that goes on behind the scenes, as with any hospital environment, every single staff member always had time to answer my questions, explain what to do and provided me with opportunities to learn. What is the result of that experience? A student that is now absolutely sure that they have chosen the right profession and want to carry on. At a time when so many professions are experiencing massive staff shortages - veterinary practices being one of them - it goes without saying that looking after the professionals of the future is of paramount importance. When everyone is busy and students can seem like a burden on your day, just remember that they may be the person that one day might be working alongside you, helping your day run just that little more smoothly. Thanks to Redlands Vets I am now more committed than ever to complete my degree and can't wait to get started working in a veterinary practice for real. That's one more person in the workforce. What are you doing to ensure you nurture the new talent of the future? #veterinary #vettech #vetnurse #maturestudent #university #internship #students #nevertoolate #everythingispossible #uq #redvet
