When people ask, “What is Mental Health First Aid? The answer is stuff like this. This is Mental health first aid in practice. Keep in mind symptoms of a panic attack and a heart attack can appear very similar. So if in doubt, call 111. However, something many people don’t think about is how to help the person after the panic attack is over. Panic attacks will leave someone literally thinking they’re going to die and they death is imminent. The adrenaline dump that occurs after mixed with the emotions and symptoms of the panic attack itself can leave a person physically and emotionally exhausted. You may need to help the person get home and make sure they’re safe. They may need the next day off work. They may need professional help ie counselling, therapy. They may have more panic attacks which also may get worse. Or they may never have another panic attack ever again. Anxiety huh, the gift that just keeps on giving!
