In this episode of our podcast, we talk with Dr. Jennifer Harvey about her book Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America. Her book tackles tough questions about how to help White kids be mindful of racial relations while understanding their own identity. In short, the book helps answer the question: “Is it possible to have a positive White racial identity?” She says, “I started looking around and there was lots of work about racial injustice and the impact on kids of color, but almost nothing about the very particular problem of how do you parent a kid for racial justice when they are simultaneously, everyday being falsely told that they're superior, being given more resources. What does that look like and what's the developmental strategies? Because it's not as simple as: ‘Okay, four-year-old White kid, the world sucks and you have to be responsible…’” Through the conversation, Dr. Harvey shares how her life changed and what led her into activism and eventually what led her to this book. She also shares ways White people can better understand their own identity and how they can move from knowledge to action. She says, “I think collectively many White folks are more eager, willing, and able to engage in this identity conversation, but I do think the big challenge right now is how do we (as White people) pivot from a tendency to wanna consume and hone and get really good at the concepts and the language to a path of action and real activism.” To learn more, listen to the full episode with our link in bio. https://buff.ly/3Sym9aw And buy the book at Bookshop.org here https://buff.ly/464DwCZ #IntegratedSchools #BlackandWhite #Interracial #Multiracial #Identity #CivilRightsMovement #HumanRights #AntiRacism #DeSegregation #WealthEquity #DiversityandInclusion #inclusion #community #redlining #diversity #socialjustice #socialjusticeeducation #wealthgap #local #publicschools #parenting #parent #momlife #dadlife #boymom #girlmom #schoolchoice #privateschool #publicschool #podcast #integratedschoolspodcast

I highly recommend listening to this podcast. Mark Stoddart is an advocate for neurodivergent people and people with Dyslexia. I love his message, “Be kind.” He is an accomplished artist who is making a difference all over the world by sharing his story, his knowledge, and his message about kindness. I look forward to reading his book coauthored with Katrin McElderry entitled “Making a Mark! Discovering the Power of Neurodiversity on a Learning Safari.” https://lnkd.in/g5CMtide

Let's get one thing straight - we ALL have biases. And sometimes mine are laid out front and centre for all to hear. Do I care? Not really. Like anything, the best way to solve a problem is first to recognise it, then to accept it and work towards resolving it. And on the latest episode of The D&Igest, this is pretty much exactly what happened. I had no clue that things we were doing on our website and via our communications were making us totally obsolete for disabled people. Now I know, we can change that. In my chat with Mike Adams OBE on the commercial opportunity around the 1.7bn people on the planet who are disabled I was schooled on: - just how HUGE the lack of inclusion is - what that impact means both for those who are disabled and their families - how it represents itself in everyday situations like online shopping and going to the loo! - but crucially just how easy it is to resolve so much of it - AND what a golden ticket it can be for businesses everywhere. I hope this sheds some light on the bright future in this space & the work that's being done by Mike and his PURPLE team. Onwards! Link in comments and please leave us a nice review or just five stars ;-) #podcast #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness Diversely.io Hayley Bakker Justin McGuire Jeroen Steenbergen Jennie Child Heeral Gudka Lillie Ubeid
