Using hearing protection is something that we often forget while out in the field or even enjoying a weekend concern. Protecting our ears is easy to do and needs to become more of a priority. I mean let’s face it we are only given two. Make sure to have safety headphones or ear plugs in your vehicle. Not all signs are posted at job sites to wear ear protection but it is your duty to remember to come prepared and carry for your own ears. Daily Safety Tip - My Hearing Protection is Uncomfortable. Employees resist hearing protection more than any other type of PPE. One reason is that they do not think they really need it. Hearing loss occurs so gradually (even in intense exposures) that by the time you notice it, irreversible damage has already occurred. Another reason for not wearing hearing protection is that it can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes workers spring the muffs (radio headsets do not qualify as hearing protection) so they do not seal properly against the head or snip off the inner portion of ear plugs leaving only the outer end to fool their supervisor. If you feel the need to do this, see your supervisor about obtaining a different type/style that fits correctly and comfortably. #hearingprotection #ppe #hearingloss

Prevention strategies include engineering controls (like soundproofing or muffling equipment), administrative controls (like scheduling breaks in quieter areas), and personal protective equipment (like earplugs or earmuffs). Regular hearing tests and education about the risks of noise exposure are also crucial for prevention.

Hearing protection is just one part of a complete hearing conservation program that should include engineering controls, administrative controls, and available hearing protection devices. Personnel working in areas that exceed 85 decibels must wear approved hearing protection devices. Hearing protection devices must be worn where required by special instructions or posted notice. The choice of hearing protective devices may depend on the noise level, comfort, and suitability of the hearing protection device for both the worker and the environment. The three general types of hearing protection are: Ear plugs are pre-formed or moldable pieces of foam that are inserted to block the ear canal. These typically have a noise reduction rating between 20 and 30 which means that wearing them will reduce the existing noise by 20-30 decibels based on laboratory test data. Ear muffs consist of a headband connecting two hard outer cups that fit around the ear and contains sound-reducing material with soft ear cushions inside. One of the BIGGEST problems with hearing healthcare is that individuals with hearing loss do not value their hearing care professional. But you know what...its NOT their fault. We have allowed Insurance companies to dictate the quality of care we provide. We have allowed OTC Hearing Aid companies say that we are just middlemen. We have allowed our patients to believe that the only value to hearing treatment is the hearing aid itself. Yep, individuals with hearing loss do not VALUE their hearing care professionals because we have allowed it to happen. If we want to solve this problem, we have to change the way we approach treating hearing loss by focusing more on QUALITY and less on quantity. I fully agree with Dr Cliff. Hearing aids are just that: aids. Hearing devices are getting increasingly advanced, but ultimately, it cannot emulate counseling expertise, at least not now. Audiologists and hearing care consultants are healthcare professionals, not touch and go commercial device salespeople. At the turn of the century, Singapore probably had a handful of hearing care experts but now we have many more than that. We are sufficiently mature for a medical industry to start ensuring high standards of care, instead of rushing to fit high quality hearing aids but having a significant proportion being rejected and left in drawers. It's time to look beyond the number of fittings, and focus on the number of good outcomes.

Sound pressure level measuring. Why can this also be important in pump installations? You can find information about the pump's sound pressure level in a pump manual. These values for sound pressure include a tolerance of 3 dB(A) according to EN 4871 or I SO 1680.   Noise regulations: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that workers wear hearing protectors when engaged in work that exposes them to noise equal to or exceeding 85 DBA as an 8-hour TWA. Sometimes, a customer wants to be sure that people can enter a building and work near a pump installation without wearing ear protection.   In that case, they call an expert to measure the sound pressure level according to DIN456635 or ISO3744 / NEN-EN-ISO 203612.
