Something to think about: It's not just about getting compensated for bad-faith rental practices. We are talking about a person's home, sense of safety and security, the impact on their friendships and connections with neighbours, the unexpected time and costs required to find new housing, the health implications of stress, social upheaval and removal of informal social supports, etc. Protections that involve compensating people after the fact misses the point. This is indicative about how we *think* about housing, often as a profit-making business, where decisions are of course made based on a landlord's bottom line and protecting their investment. This is not a dig at landlords, many (most) I know are amazing and want to do good. But this is systems level stuff again: If we *think* about housing as a business, then humanitarian policies and laws are really hard to put in place. If we *think* about housing as a human right, with a whole lot of meanings beyond the most basic understanding as shelter, we start to question how housing could ever be considered a business in the first place. That's where my mind goes anyways.
Tenants across the country are struggling with a surge in bad faith "landlord’s use" evictions. In Ontario, there is some compensation available for tenants who can prove a bad-faith eviction, but the process is complex, can take years and the emotional and financial toll is immense with limited financial redress. Many give up. Advocates are calling for stronger tenant protections and easier access to legal aid to help address the difficulties tenants face in asserting their rights. https://lnkd.in/gQXyS8xJ

Just a reminder Property Rights | Home Owner Rights are laws and rights so deep and longstanding it’s spelled out in our Country’s constitution. The need for affordable housing, tenant rights or the new adage that “housing is a human right” does not and should not infringe upon the property owner rights; nor should the desire of government to assist those who need it be on the back of property owners. I’ve written to legislators before, had these hard discussions both locally and statewide. New bills are attempting to be passed into law, agencies will be promoting tenant rights (as a side note what I’ve stated does not negate landlord responsibility and upkeep so it’s dilapidated). Government’s need or a community’s desire to solve housing problems should never be on the back of people who are providing for self, future self, their goals, their financial independence or their family legacy. Nor hindered because of business savvy or acumen. If you are altruistic and want to provide housing to offset local municipalities demand or their state mandate requirements, let’s talk. I have some really great options that you can GIVE and PROVIDE to the community yet still have ownership of your property. I mean, cities hold land and allow it to be used for certain purposes or partnerships, you can too. #realestate #housing #investmentproperty #solvingproblems
