🦈 The best week of the year is here—it's #SharkWeek! Sharks are vital to the health of our ocean—but more than 100 million are killed each year. The United Nations' high seas treaty could safeguard their habitats and promote ocean resilience. https://pew.org/45WIXFz #Conservation

Today is the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, which serves as a powerful reminder of the damage conflict can cause to the natural world around us. 🌱 Wartime environmental damage can include explosive remains, soil degradation, and excessive carbon emissions. The consequences of these wartime actions can be long-lasting and devastating, and cause further challenges for already vulnerable populations. In Afghanistan, conflict has resulted in extensive soil degradation and deforestation. In a country where most people rely on agriculture to earn an income, the effects of this can be devastating. 🕊️ As we recognize this day, let us commit ourselves to the protection of our world's environment, recognizing that environmental preservation is intertwined with the promotion of peace and the wellbeing of present and future generations. 🌍💪 🔗 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3sbLQTG

#GlobalOceansTreaty #GreenpeaceUSA #GreenpeaceInternational How would you describe the Galapagos Islands? Some would say it is a place of prehistoric beauty. A place where time stands still because you've entered another dimension, where birds have big, bright blue legs and iguanas dive into the ocean for food. Others will say it's a melting pot of extraordinary ocean creatures like fur seals. At Greenpeace USA we have chosen to consider the Galapagos Islands as one of the best examples of ocean protection in the world. This is why we ask you, People of the United States, to please send a message to your Senators now to support the ratification of the World Ocean Treaty, as at least 70 governments, including the United States, signed the Global Ocean Treaty on the very first day it was open for signature in September 2023. This will ensure that at least 30% of the world's oceans can benefit from the same protection conditions that the Galapagos Islands currently benefit from.

After effect of wars and conflicts on the environment Often times humanity take into account war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, destroyed cities and livelihoods, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war. Water wells have been polluted, crops torched, forests cut down, soils poisoned, and animals killed to gain military advantage. Furthermore, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has found that over the last 60 years, at least 40 percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources, whether high-value resources such as timber, diamonds, gold and oil, or scarce resources such as fertile land and water. Conflicts involving natural resources have also been found to be twice as likely to relapse.
