Last year, I was introduced to books written by Daniel Goleman about emotional intelligence. It segued into the negotiation style I've unknowingly settled into - the accommodative style. I've been practicing a collaborative negotiation style since the start of this year. I share this as not many tech immigrants who come to USA know about such styles as they were never taught/exposed to such topics and everyone developed their style by hit and trial based on their personality and upbringing. Outcome is the key. The choice and intensity our of actions depend on the Outcome we want to accomplish. The good Outcomes must be achieved with the right actions i.e., HOW we accomplish the Outcomes defines us. #integrity #outcome #growthmindset

Negotiation is about creativity, not compromise. I had a mindless argument with an old friend yesterday. Each one of us knew we were pulling it the wrong way. This got me thinking. What could I have done better? And how I lost some opportunities by being rigid. I need to change my approach to negotiations. It needs to change: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: What do you want? 𝐓𝐨: Why do you want it? 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞: Understand real needs, not just demands. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: How can I win? 𝐓𝐨: How can we both benefit? 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞: Create a team mindset instead of a competition. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: Let's agree to disagree. 𝐓𝐨: Why do we see this differently? 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞: Find common ground by understanding each other better. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: Take it or leave it. 𝐓𝐨: Let's think of more options together. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞: Work together to find new solutions. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: I must defend my view. 𝐓𝐨: I'm willing to learn and change my mind. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞: Show openness to new ideas and information. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦: Let's rush this. It's smart. Brainstorming isn't losing control. It expands possibilities. Seeking mutual benefit isn't giving in. It creates more value. Exploring differences isn't giving up. It leads to better solutions. Being open-minded isn't uncertain. It's a willingness to learn. Addressing emotions isn't overly sensitive. It's wise action. Building trust isn't a waste. It's an investment.
