The Mcdonalds global tech outage demonstrates how vulnerable connected IT systems are to break downs and cyber attacks... Whether this is a cyber attack or not, the increasing frequency of such disruptions will become more common. The utopia of a cash less economy is a similar pipe dream - when there is one concentrated cyber attack to knock out bank data on client holdings lets see how central banks prevent a bank run of that nature ... The great rush to embrace technology is de-humanising us and blunting our survival instincts. Commiserations to the Maccas regulars for this briefest of disruptions...

#Digitisation absent consumer centricity is destined for backlash and eventual failure. While there is enough and more zeal among enterprises to digitise their product and service offering through QR codes etc, it’s more organization forward action than consumer backward. As a result, these digital initiatives, instead of enhancing consumer experiences and revenue, ends up falling into bucket of ‘avoidable’ cost. Consumers look forward to ease but not at cost of #security and #privacy. Companies want to collate information but without financial exposures which is likely to arise from data leaks, phishing and hacks. Without Gold standard security and ease of use, digitisation initiatives are more than likely to backfire. Is this a cyber security issue? Well, it might not have been caused by a malicious actor, but even if this just happened because of errors or technical failures, what you see here is a system that lacked resiliency and apparently is a global single point failure.

Over complexity… over connected. Are we approaching a tipping point point? Is a perfect storm on the horizon or will malicious actors seed the clouds (pun intended) to bring about a perfect storm that causes unimaginable consequences? I can survive without McDonalds… but what was the financial impact of this kind of event? What was the impact on tax revenue? If you combine a dozen or more events in a short period of time that overlap… how many does it take to create real chaos?

Apparently today McDonald's is unable to take money from customers in exchange for product, today. Coincidentally, it appears that their public-facing website doesn't have any Content Security Policy (CSP) defined. The lack of a CSP, or a poorly defined and incomplete CSP, is an interesting proxy for how seriously an organization takes security in general. #infosec #natsec Information security *is* national security.
