Un Silenced. Until we have justice, at least we have voices. Women are still silenced, still abused everywhere in the world purely because they are women. As long as women are undermined, underrepresented in leadership - government, police, industry - there will continue to be a disparity in how genders are viewed in terms of their value and inherent worth. As long as men like Bruce Lehrmann can drag their victims through consecutive media/legal trials (while being lavished with money and free accommodation by the Seven network), and major sports celebrities can rape women and be released without punishment (thanks to expensive, savvy lawyers), this nation will continue to remind women our lives matter less. We don't need rhetoric, we need meaningful representation and a justice system that puts women's needs at the forefront. We need more women judges, more women MPs, and if that means gender quotas, do it.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, marking the date in 1920 when citizens were guaranteed the right to vote regardless of their sex through the ratification of the Constitution’s 19th Amendment. Women’s Equality Day celebrates women’s resilience in the face of adversity as they fought for equal rights. The first women’s rights convention took place July 19-20, 1948, in Seneca Falls, New York. There were hundreds of attendees, with many signing the Declaration of Sentiments, a document detailing gender inequality in America. Among the notable signatories were suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who believed women’s rights and black rights were inseparable. From the Revolutionary War through World War II, women served in the military, but mainly during wartime and in a civilian capacity. Then, in 1948, Congress granted women the right to “serve as permanent, regular members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force” under the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Sixty-five years later, on Jan. 24, 2013, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta removed the military’s ban on women serving in combat. Currently, about 17.3% of active-duty members are female. Whole human systems. Let's build for that. Bringing our whole selves to our work and whole communities, to the decision-making tables, is a crucial next step to enabling choices that include everyone, and all the complex aspects of our lives. Then, perhaps, we'll be able to build systems of restoration. Of inclusion. Of human sustainability. I think we do it.

Inclusion in Democracy I've been thinking a lot about democracy lately and keep coming back to one question: does democracy really include everyone? We all know that democracy is supposed to be a system where the people make decisions about laws, policies, and leadership. But often, it seems like it's just the majority's needs that get prioritised, leaving minority voices unheard. True inclusion in a democracy is tough. It's all about finding the right balance between majority rule and protecting minority rights. We need to make sure everyone's voice is heard, not just those who are in the majority. Things like proportional representation and minority rights protections are steps in the right direction, but we need to keep pushing for more.
