This is awesome and needs to be shared widely! I have a favorite definition of innovation (doesn’t everyone? 🤪) and Greenhalgh (2004) defines #innovationinhealthcare as “as a novel set of behaviors, routines, and ways of working that are directed at improving health outcomes, administrative efficiency, cost effectiveness, or users’ experience and that are implemented by planned and coordinated actions.” The definition is broad and inclusive. This is what we do. This is what clinical staff do all day long to make their work more efficient. The best part? Throughout my career, I frequently receive urgent requests for assistance from various sources - ranging from hospital employees, families in search of care for their loved ones, community allies, physicians and peers within our industry. These conversations typically focus on developing care and placement strategies for those in crisis without a plan for long-term or supportive services. Despite these challenges, Skilled Nursing Facilities, (SNFs) are often called upon to overcome these complexities, and they strive diligently to offer supportive care to those in need. Moreover, with hospitals discharging patients sooner, many of whom have increasingly complex clinical needs, our sector's role in providing additional support is more crucial than ever. Achieving the best outcomes requires a collective effort in the most challenging of cases. When we prioritize strengthening our community support and enhancing our alliances across the continuum of care, we acknowledge the vital resources we all provide in support to those with the direst needs. Being a bootstrapping solopreneur for 4+ years with no formal background in business means I have failed A LOT. 😂 But it also means I've learnt SO much about building online products and communities. When it came to deciding whether or not to start my new venture, I'd learnt to first let the world tell me if they actually needed my product, before I started to build it. I learnt how to validate ideas before launching them, in other words - does anyone even want this or am I being totally delusional (again)? In an effort to validate this new idea, I started creating YouTube videos on my experience of leaving medicine, and on alternative careers for doctors. I then set up a waitlist to gauge people's interest in joining a community of like-minded peers. I told myself I'd only go all in if I got to at least 100 people on the waitlist. Well... I'm super happy to share that that day has come!! Although I'm not gonna lie, I definitely already started working on the product when the waitlist had already hit 20 people. I just can't help myself. 😂 😬 So although I was hesitant to showcase to the world yet another potential flop, this time feels different. Over the past few years I've met so many amazing doctors and ex-doctors such as ☀️ Dr Anjalee Perera ▫️Dr India Duane Dr Yosi Anderson Dr Alisha Damani 🩺 Dr Gyles Morrison MBBS MSc Dr Lorelle Brownlee Dr Wiktor Szczudlinski Sara K. Miriam Fine (and my fave med student Christina Aaliyah Davis, nurse Dunia Ali and many more doctors off-platform!) who are exploring, or have already explored, alternative paths to clinical medicine. I hope to meet more of these inspiring doctors in the months to come, specifically Dr Ally Jaffee MBChB BSc Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS Dr Karan Rajan, Dr Claire Ashley, Dr Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim - I am in awe of all of your work and accomplishments! Whether it's starting a new career entirely, or building side-hustles and companies alongside clinical medicine, these doctors have shown that it's possible to thrive outside of the typical clinical routes we've become accustomed to. I've also learnt from another well-known ex-doctor Ali Abdaal (5M+ YouTube subscribers 👀 👏 ) after taking his course, that the last person standing wins. As a bootstrapping solopreneur, I've run myself (and my companies) into the ground by pushing too hard, too soon, and overworking myself daily. But Ali has taught me that sustainability and consistency are superpowers in this space. It's with that in mind that I hope this network will be around for a long time to come, and that it will provide much needed non-judgmental support to doctors, med students, nurses and other healthcare professionals carving out non-traditional career paths. After a long and wild ride, John F. Waters, MSN, ANP-BC and I have successfully launched The Cove Concierge Medicine in Castle Rock, and established three new patients in our very first week. A couple of thoughts I just want to reflect on this evening: 1) breaking from the easier path to labor for 18 months on top of full times jobs (50+ hrs a week) plus trying to live life and find ourselves was HARD. However, for the price of freedom to own our office and truly take excellent care of others the way they deserve, we would struggle over and over again. My lesson learned: be brave and embrace the challenges, because the rewards may be endless and so very sweet. 2) patients continue to teach me that doctors often times need to “shut up and listen” because the patient will tell you what’s going on. Some in my profession struggle with hubris and don’t care to listen. But, the majority of providers are good people who want to help, but they are stuck in a system that does not allow them to provide high quality care without a sacrifice to themselves or their patients. #donewiththat A patient came to me yesterday and we literally spent 2.5 hours today to understand her history in depth, the acuity of her symptoms, her medication challenges/apprehensions, and her goals (what care was she seeking from us). With some safe medications and lots of talking through her problems, she left smiling instead of sobbing. I called to follow up with her today and she states she finally had slept and was feeling better. My lesson learned: if motivated physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are well studied and well trained, let them drive the care the right way. They will heal the patient and find ways to reset the course of the healthcare system so many of us clinicians struggle in. Together, we can shift the paradigm back to providing excellent care and offering time to have problems addressed. And lastly…this afternoon, my embroidered white coat has arrive with not just my name, but my very own office logo. A celebratory toast to my adventure that I never thought I would take. You know what I feel in my heart?…this is going to be good!!!!!

As a nurse, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a cornerstone in my daily practice of care. Signed 75 years ago, this document establishes a set of basic rights that should be universally protected, including the right to health and well-being. In my profession, this translates to treating each patient with dignity, respect, and compassion, regardless of their background, beliefs, or socioeconomic status. The Declaration also emphasizes the importance of equal access to healthcare, a principle that guides my commitment to providing the best possible care to all patients. This means not only treating illnesses and injuries but also promoting health and preventing disease, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life. Currently, we face significant challenges in upholding and advancing these fundamental human rights. Issues such as health inequalities, humanitarian crises, global pandemics, and limited resources have put immense pressure on healthcare systems worldwide. As a nurse, I witness the impact of these challenges on the front lines, where the struggle to maintain care standards and equity is constant. Despite these obstacles, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights continues to be a moral compass for my practice. It reminds me of the responsibility I hold not just in caring for my patients but also in advocating for their rights and dignity in all situations. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of this historic document, it's crucial to reflect on how far we have come and the work that still needs to be done to ensure these rights are a reality for everyone.
