We appear to have entered an era where "sustainability" has become a new cultural hegemon. During the Cold War, the world experienced a "sociopolitical" cultural hegemony, where the majority of knowledge production was driven by and served this paradigm. Many contemporary arguments suggest that as the world moved beyond the Cold War into a post-ideological and more globalized era, the concept of sustainability gained prominence, having previously been constrained. These arguments often present sustainability as a post-sociopolitical approach. However, it seems that sustainability has actually become central to the sociopolitical agenda, particularly for left-leaning parties. Ironically, while the sustainability approach often claims to challenge the dominance of political agendas over environmental concerns, it has itself evolved into a political approach. Over time, deep state actors, policymakers, and funding institutions (both governmental and private) have been steering the world towards this agenda. I've observed that most funding opportunities - scholarships, fellowships, grants, and the like - are now primarily allocated to sustainable and environmental initiatives. In my view, this trend has begun to manifest as a hegemonic cliché, effectively shifting the world from an era of "sociopolitical" cultural hegemony to one of "environmental sustainability" cultural hegemony. This shift has also impacted the Global South, where "sustainability" has become a primary principle, often imposed by the elite leftist West. Consequently, many students, institutions, and think tanks in the Global South now find themselves compelled to realign their focus to attract Western funding.
