News for Ukrainians Worldwide! 🌍🇺🇦 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has just announced a new development in Ukrainian citizenship. In his video address on Unity Day, he revealed plans to submit a bill on multiple citizenship to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament). This big change will grant citizenship not only to ethnic Ukrainians but also to their descendants scattered across the globe. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the new policy would extend to those who were forced to leave their homeland during various waves of emigration, embracing individuals in Europe, the United States, Canada, Asia, and Latin America. However, there's a clear exception – citizens of the aggressor country will not be eligible. President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to foreign volunteers who defended Ukraine and all those who contributed to the nation's well-being from afar. The bill aims to recognize the efforts of individuals who, despite being hundreds and thousands of miles away, consider Ukraine their true home. Currently, the Ukrainian Constitution permits only singular citizenship, but this proposed legislation marks a departure from that norm. President Zelenskyy had previously announced on December 1, 2021, his intention to introduce legislation allowing Ukrainians to hold citizenship of foreign countries. The move aligns with Zelenskyy's commitment to the Ukrainian diaspora, particularly in the United States, where he pledged to implement the concept of dual citizenship on September 22. Benin🇧🇯 proposes law to grant citizenship to diaspora citizens with African roots The Beninese government, led by President Patrice Talon, submitted a bill to parliament seeking to grant Beninese citizenship to individuals of African descent. According to the government, the bill is geared to strengthen cultural and historical ties with the descendants of Africans deported during the slave trade, addressing the "deep wounds on African societies, in general, and on the descendants of those deported and enslaved, in particular" To be eligible, applicants must provide evidence of their African descent through civil status documents, authenticated testimonies or DNA tests conducted by accredited institutions in Benin. However it is essential to note that this recognition of nationality does not grant political rights, such as the right to vote or access to civil service positions. Successful applicants will receive a three year Benin passport, but to obtain a naturalization certificate "they must stay in the country for a few days" before their passport expires. If this bill passes, Benin will join Liberia🇲🇾, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, Sudan 🇸🇩, South Sudan 🇸🇸, Eritrea 🇪🇷, Rwanda 🇷🇼 and Zambia 🇿🇲 as the only African nations that grant citizenship by descent to third generation dependents and beyond. ... Schools were a battleground of cultures, where African students often dominated in numbers, yet all of us grappled with the harsh realities of racism—from skinheads to Hell's Angels, and even from within the local communities. It's a bitter pill to swallow when observing the present discourse around immigration in the UK, particularly when figures like Suella Braverman, whose own parents sought refuge from Uganda's turmoil, spearhead campaigns to tighten the very immigration laws that once offered her family shelter. This perceived betrayal resonates deeply, as it feels that those who should understand the immigrant struggle the most are now its greatest adversaries. What strikes me most is the shift in narrative—from a once multicultural embrace to a chilling endeavor to erase this richness from the fabric of British society. It’s a classic case of forgetting one's roots, an act that not only undermines the contributions of past immigrants but also dims the prospects for future ones. As we reflect on this, we must ask ourselves and our communities, especially those of us with ties to African heritage: Is the struggle worth enduring in a land where we are often seen as third-class citizens? Since May 2019, Russia has had a simplified naturalization procedure for Ukrainians who had lived in Crimea and Sevastopol until March 2014. In late October 2023, a new law on citizenship came into effect in Russia. The current executive order grants Ukrainian nationals, who had left Crimea and Sevastopol before March 2014, the right to obtain Russian citizenship in a simplified procedure in accordance with the new law. Furthermore, according to the executive order, citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and Syria who were born in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and were citizens of the Soviet Union, as well as people who were illegally deported from the Crimean Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (ASSR) can obtain Russian citizenship in a simplified procedure. The simplified naturalization procedure also extends to Ukrainian nationals and stateless people who have a temporary residence permit in Russia, a residence permit, a temporary asylum certificate, a refugee certificate or a certificate of a participant in the national program for the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad, or who lived permanently in certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine as of April 2014, as well as their children, spouses and parents. #business #finance #financialservices
